Priaulx claims sixth on the grid for WTCC season opener - Farfus seventh.
Curitiba, 6th March 2010. In the first qualifying session of the 2010 FIA World Touring Car Championship, Andy Priaulx (GB) finished sixth for BMW Team RBM. At the "Autodromo Internacional" in Curitiba (BR), the triple world champion set a personal best time of 1:23.955 minutes.
Augusto Farfus (BR) was just 26 thousandths of a second slower than his team- mate. The local hero will start the first race on Sunday from seventh on the grid. With a gap of 0.230 seconds from Priaulx, Chevrolet's Yvan Muller (FR) secured the first pole position of the year. In the first phase of qualifying, Farfus and Priaulx finished fourth and sixth.
Bart Mampaey (Team Principal):
"It's positive that our qualifying strategy worked out as planned. We wanted to use the co-operation between our two drivers to the best possible advantage - and this worked out perfectly. The lap times of Andy and Augusto were very close to each other. However, our competitors were more than two hundredths of a second faster than us today. We will work hard in order to close the gap and start Sunday's race well-prepared. From sixth and seventh on the grid there is still a lot possible for tomorrow."
Andy Priaulx (Car Number 11):
Qualifying 1: 6th, 1:24.034 min - Qualifying 2: 6th, 1:23.955 min
"We can't be totally happy with these grid positions. On my first flying lap Augusto and I worked very well together, but I lost some time going into Turn 1. Then I had slight understeer in Turn 5. Overall it was a good lap, but I didn't achieve the time that was possible. On my third lap I was on the way up and got a very good slipstream. But then another car went off in the last corner, forcing me to lift off. We have a lot of work to do, in order to get the most out of our new tyres and to make the most of our potential. However, a good result tomorrow is still possible."
Augusto Farfus (Car Number 10):
Qualifying 1: 2nd., 1:24.006 min - Qualifying 2: 7th, 1:23.981 min
"Obviously I'm not really happy with the outcome of today's qualifying. In front of my home crowd I would have loved to be further up the grid. In the practice sessions we had been at the front of the grid, but in qualifying our rivals were quicker than us. We have to respect their good performance. Our pace on used tyres is really strong, so the balance of power might well change in the races. We will now analyse today's session and make the necessary changes for Sunday."
The first round of the 2010 World Touring Car Championship will kick off tomorrow at 14:20hrs local time (17:20hrs GMT). Race two will get underway at 15:35hrs (18:35hrs GMT).
