MACAU - Rob Huff stormed to pole position in today’s qualifying for the last round of the 2012 World Touring Car Championship season as the RML-run Cruzes took the top three places for Race 1 on Sunday.

The Briton also re-wrote the history books as he was the first touring car driver to complete the 6.1km circuit in under 2’30”.

This was his fourth consecutive pole at the narrow and fast track in the streets of the former Portuguese enclave and also won five of the last eight races in Macau.

Teammates Yvan Muller and Alain Menu were 2nd and 3rd fastest respectively, completing the all-blue line up at the front of the grid.

Huff, who leads the overall standings, is ideally placed to clinch his first WTCC Drivers’ World Champion title on Sunday.

He has increased his points lead at the top of the standings, with Menu 37 points behind and Muller with a 42-point deficit. A total of 50 points remain on offer.

The excellent performance of the Cruzes was completed by the two Bamboo Engineering cars.

Hong Kong driver Darryl O’Young, who sees Macau as his home race, was 6th overall and took the Independents’ pole for the third year in a row.

Alex MacDowall was 10th overall which means he will start Race 2 on pole.

With the nine points obtained today, Chevrolet has increased its tally to 939, getting closer to reaching the 1,000-point threshold, a first for any manufacturer in the WTCC.

No WTCC track activity is planned for Saturday, allowing the teams and drivers to prepare ahead of the final two races on Sunday, which will also be Chevrolet’s farewell to the series after an extremely successful eight years and three Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ titles.
