SEAT drivers Tim and Tom Coronel race together in WTCC
This weekend, Tim and Tom Coronel will both be racing a SEAT Leon in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) at the circuit of Brno in the Czech Republic. A unique feat: never before did twin brothers race in a world championship round! Under the banner of SEAT Team Holland, Tom Coronel is a regular competitor in the championship. Tim Coronel earned his ride as a guest driver in the WTCC because of his good results in the season opening weekend of the SEAT Leon Eurocup. "Racing together is a very special thing for us, we are really looking forward to it", Tim and Tom Coronel say on the eve of the race meeting.
For Tom Coronel, the event at the Brno circuit marks the sixth round of the season after the meetings at Curitiba, Puebla, Marrakesh, Pau and Valencia. Last weekend, Tom Coronel raced in the Le Mans 24 Hours, just like SEAT works-driver Tiago Monteiro. "Le Mans was fantastic, but now, I am really eager to go for it at Brno", said the SEAT Team Holland driver. "At Valencia, I won the independents' class for the first time this season and I am now also leading the points' standings in this championship. The characteristics of the Brno circuit aren't ideal for us, but of course, I will do my utmost. Competing in one race together with Tim is just great!"
Tim Coronel prepared for his upcoming debut at world championship level by testing the SEAT Leon WTCC at a circuit near Barcelona. "First, I did the shakedown with Tom's car. That felt like a real honour. After that, I drove my own race car. I didn't have a frame of reference, so it is difficult to judge how things were going, but I had the impression that it went pretty well", Tim Coronel reports. "Compared to the SEAT Leon from the Eurocup, the main differences in the WTCC car are a quicker gearshift, more precise steering and better balance. Moreover, driving with tyres that have been warmed up was a new experience for me. You have grip right away, so you can be quick right away!"
Next to his guest appearance in the WTCC, Tim Coronel will also be taking part in both races of the SEAT Leon Eurocup at Brno. "With a total of four races, it will be a busy weekend for me, but racing is the best thing there is", he says. To prepare for their joint appearance in the WTCC, Tim and Tom Coronel opted for a very special strategy.
