Double Win For Alain And Rob In Race 1 - Huff (6th In Race 2) Increases Points Toll
BRANDS HATCH, 19th July 2009 The Chevrolet team and Alain Menu achieved winning for the fourth year in a row one of the WTCC races in Brands Hatch, one of the most legendary tracks in the world. The Swiss driver gave the Cruze its first win on a traditional circuit ahead of team-mate Rob Huff in race 1. The two Chevrolet drivers, starting from the front row, applied a prefect strategy that prevented any threat from the competition.
In Race 2, Rob Huff finished 6th after a good fight, collecting more points and closing the gap with the championship leader, while Alain Menu saw his race spoiled by an off-track incident at the first corner. Nicola Larini had a frustrating Sunday, courtesy of a contact with Farfus and a slow puncture from some carbon debris on the track in race 1, when he was in 7th position (and a start from the front row for race 2) in sight.
Alain Menu (1st/18th): "A hat-trick in Brands: that is wonderful, I can't believe it! In race 1, our strategy worked out perfectly. We had planned that at the start I would control Priaulx, our most dangerous opponent, while Rob would take the lead. Then I would re-take position 1, if I was faster than Rob. That is exactly what happened and Rob gave me strong support keeping everybody behind us and securing another great result for the team. In race 2, I was squeezed in the first corner, with no other option than going into the gravel and the grass. Something must have been bent there because the car was under-steering a lot after that incident".
Rob Huff (2nd/6th): "I'm very happy of the points scored today. Of course, I would have liked to win race 1 here at home and in front of my fans, but Alain was faster, so I let him go on lap 5 and I just focused on protecting a great team result for Chevrolet, which was a hard job because the guys behind me were pushing a lot, but it worked! In race 2, I had another good fight with Monteiro and Zanardi and I managed to pass both of them, finishing sixth and scoring some more good points".
Nicola Larini (22nd/Ret): "My objective was race 2 and everything was going well: the car felt good and I was in 7th position in race 1 and virtually on the first row for race 2. Then, a tyre deflated and that was it. What happened is that when Farfus did a half spin in the first lap and we touched and unfortunately a little carbon piece of bodywork got stuck in between the rim and the tyre. For most of the race nothing happened, but there was a lap too much... There was little I could do in race 2 and I was also struggling with some under-steer".
Mark Busfield: "It has been a very good day for Chevrolet, with another win and some solid points for Rob in the championship. It is unfortunate that Nicola was out in the last lap in race 1, because he could have done something good in race 2, but all in all, it is another great result for the whole team and we are very pleased." ./.. Eric Nève: "With this fourth success of Alain and Chevrolet at Brands Hatch, we have won every time the WTCC has visited the Kent track. I think this is unprecedented in the championship, certainly as far as drivers are concerned. It's great to see the Cruze winning on a traditional circuit and it's great to see Rob increasing his point toll and being well placed in the race for the title".
