The road to Macau: An overview of the 2007 WTCC season.
The FIA World Touring Car Championship will be decided on 18th November at the "Guia Circuit" in Macau (CHN). Three BMW drivers, Andy Priaulx (GBR) of BMW Team UK and the two BMW Team Germany drivers Augusto Farfus (BRA) and Jorg Muller (GER), are still in with a chance of being crowned champion. BMW also leads the Manufacturers' Championship with 237 points. In the previous 20 races of the season, BMW drivers have provided numerous highlights. Right from the word go, everything pointed toward another World Championship showdown in the former Portuguese colony of Macau--
Curitiba, Brazil. The BMW national teams make an ideal start to the season in Curitiba. Muller takes advantage of his pole position in the season opener and crosses the line ahead of Priaulx and Farfus. The second race provides another "clean sweep" on the podium for BMW: this time Farfus is triumphant in front of his home fans. He is joined on the podium by Priaulx and Muller. This is the first time in World Championship history that BMW occupies all the podium places over an entire WTCC weekend. Farfus, Muller and Priaulx finish the weekend sharing the lead in the Drivers' Championship on 16 points.
Zandvoort, Netherlands. Zandvoort makes its debut on the WTCC calendar, and the BMW national teams achieve two podium finishes. Farfus and Muller claim second and third place respectively in the afternoon race. Farfus takes the sole lead in the Drivers' Championship with 28 points.
Valencia, Spain. At the "Circuit de la Comunitat", Muller comes second in the sixth race of the season, and replaces his team-mate Farfus as the overall leader. The 38-year-old leads the World Championship with 31 points, ahead of Priaulx, who is also on 31 points, having picked up 10 points in Spain. In the Manufacturers' Championship, BMW heads the standings since the start of the season, and remains at the top with 81 points.
Pau, France. In Pau, it is Farfus who provides the headlines. After a brilliant comeback in the second race of the day, the 24-year-old secures his second victory of the season ahead of Priaulx. The triumph is preceded by a spectacular crash in qualifying. With 42 points, Priaulx moves to the top of the World Championship standings for the first time this year. Farfus (40) now occupies second place behind the 33-year-old.
Brno, Czech Republic. For the second time in the 2007 WTCC, all the podium places are reserved for BMW national team drivers. First, Felix Porteiro (ESP) celebrates his maiden victory for BMW Team Italy-Spain, ahead of Muller and his team-mate Alessandro Zanardi (ITA). In the second race, BMW Team Germany achieves its first one-two of the season: Muller takes the chequered flag ahead of Farfus, with Porteiro finishing third. BMW drivers also occupy the top three places in the Drivers' Championship: Farfus (53 points) leads, ahead of Muller (49) and Priaulx (44).
Porto, Portugal. On the classic "Circuito da Boavista", Priaulx shows that he has not forgotten how to win races. The BMW Team UK driver wins the 12th round of the season, ahead of Muller in second place. This completes the sixth BMW one-two of the year. The lead changes again in the Drivers' Championship: Muller takes over at the top of the standings with 58 points, just two points ahead of both Farfus and Priaulx in second and third place.
Anderstorp, Sweden. The rain makes Anderstorp a lottery, and Muller, Farfus and Priaulx suffer with a maximum weight handicap of 60 kg. Farfus is the only BMW driver to score a point by finishing eighth in the second race at the "Scandinavian Raceway". Despite this disappointing result, there is no change at the top of the Drivers' Championship: Muller leads, ahead of Farfus and Priaulx.
Oschersleben, Germany. At BMW Team Germany's home race in the "Motorsport Arena Oschersleben", Farfus enjoys his third victory of the season. He wins the 16th race of the season ahead of Priaulx. The two BMW drivers are locked in a thrilling duel for the lead throughout the entire race. With 69 points, Farfus resumes his place at the top of the Drivers' Championship standings. The Brazilian is closely trailed by Priaulx (68) and Muller (63). BMW also leads the Manufacturers' Championship with 204 points.
Brands Hatch, Great Britain. Priaulx regains the lead in the Drivers' Championship in front of his home fans with his second victory of the season. This is also BMW's eighth one-two: in the afternoon race around the 3.703 km "Brands Hatch Circuit", Priaulx triumphs ahead of fellow BMW driver Porteiro, and leads the overall standings with 81 points, ahead of Farfus (69).
Monza, Italy. Even the final European stop on the WTCC calendar cannot deliver a clearer picture in the drivers' classification: While Priaulx and Muller leave Monza empty-handed, Farfus picks up two points. Going into the season finale in Macau, Priaulx is now level on 81 points with Yvan Muller (SEAT) at the top of the Drivers' Championship. Farfus is in third place with 71 points. Muller currently lies in fifth place with 66 points. Theoretically, six drivers still have a chance of being crowned world champion. In the Manufacturers' Championship, BMW (237) has a ten-point lead over SEAT. The stage is set for an exciting finale.
