Hot Weather Equals Slow Start for Supersport Team
Today's first Supersport qualifying session saw the track temperature hit 51 degrees as the Yamaha World Supersport Team started the process of finding the right set-up for race day. Although the team tested here only last month, the conditions for the test were a lot cooler than today's sweltering heat. This meant that much of the data gathered in testing proved no help today.
Parkes managed to go third fastest in this morning's free practice despite finding little grip on the track due to overnight rain followed by rising temperatures, posting a 2'06.753. The differing conditions to testing were reflected in everyone's lap times being about two seconds off last month's pace. The afternoon qualifying session saw Parkes struggle to improve upon his morning time and he finished the day on the second row of the grid in eighth position.
Following testing at Vallelunga two weeks ago, Jason O'Halloran has joined the Yamaha World Supersport Team for this weekend's race and wasted no time today getting stuck into the challenge of learning a new track and different bike. The 19 year-old has been drafted in from the Australian Supersport Championship where he is currently in second place and fighting for the Championship title. His first day was spent getting to know the circuit, which he has never been to before, as well as getting to know the YZF-R6 better. After 26 laps he ended the day in 21st place with a best time of 2'08.012.
Massimo Roccoli, riding for the Yamaha Team Italia squad, took almost a second off his best time of the morning session to finish the day in 14th provisional qualifying position. Yamaha-shod Team GMT 94 riders David Checa and Sebastien Gimbert finished just ahead of him in 11th and 13th respectively.
Parkes will be targeting the front row of the grid during tomorrow's final qualifying session, which is currently made up by Sofuoglu, Charpentier, Harms and Kallio.
Broc Parkes (8th - 2'06.800 - Yamaha World Supersport Team)
"This morning wasn't great with no grip, but we struggled more this afternoon with our settings than we did this morning. We tried a selection of different setting options and nothing made any improvement. I'm not unduly concerned as we have tomorrow to get things sorted and get a good front row position, but we're going to have a good look at what can be improved now so we're ready."
Jason O'Halloran (21st - 2'08.012 - Yamaha World Supersport Team)
"Brno is certainly a tough track with plenty of fast corners to learn. You've got to be quite hard on the front here which means you have to have good feeling in order to push it and go faster. The level of riding ability is not that much higher than in the Australian Supersport Championship but there's a lot more people out there than I'm used to. I'm comfortable though, with what needs to be achieved. I need to get used to the bike and track and then my times and grid position will improve tomorrow for certain."
Massimo Roccoli (14th - 2'07.406 - Yamaha Team Italia)
"I don't know why fully but the bike is sliding around a lot. It's probably partly due to the heat but I think there is also some adjustment needed to the gearing. This is my challenge - to solve this problem tomorrow!"
