Sofuoglu on the front row at Misano
The weather remained hot and sunny for the second day of World Supersport Championship qualifying at Misano today. HANNspree Ten Kate Honda's Kenan Sofuoglu will start tomorrow's 22-lap race from the front row of the grid, while team-mate Sebastien Charpentier qualified in ninth position for a third row start.
Both riders worked hard to improve on yesterday's lap times during this afternoon's official qualifying. Kenan Sofuoglu set the fastest lap three times and held on the top spot on the timesheet for the majority of the 45-minute session. It was only in the last five minutes that the Turkish rider got caught behind slow traffic while attempting a fast lap and was forced into fourth position. His final time was 1'39.411 - just two tenths of a second off pole position.
Team-mate Sebastien Charpentier began the second qualifying on top form and set a fastest lap after 15 minutes on the track. He proceeded to attempt a second fast lap that would almost certainly have seen him on pole, but unfortunately lost the front end of his CBR600RR on the final sector. Having already swapped to his second bike after experiencing clutch problems with his first, the Frenchman was forced to sit out of the remainder of the session. His best lap stands at 1'39.753 and he will start tomorrow's race from ninth on the grid.
Ronald ten Kate, Team Manager:
"Today has been quite hectic for us. Kenan had problems yesterday, but he has worked really hard today and shown that he has great potential for tomorrow's race. He held onto provisional pole for quite a long time and ended in the front row so he got what he wanted. Sebastien had more difficulty in the session and crashed out while on a really fast lap that would have led to provisional pole and probably the final pole position. He lost the front end and had to come into the pitbox. He was already on his second bike as the first bike had clutch problems and we were unable to fix the bikes during the session so he had to sit out. Hopefully we can race for a good result tomorrow and the black cloud that seems to be hanging over Sebastien will lift."
"This afternoon was very difficult. I started with bike one and had an immediate problem with the clutch. I swapped to the second bike but used the tyre very quickly, so I stopped to change the tyre and I went for the fast lap. Unfortunately I lost the front end of the bike in the last part of the lap. It was impossible to go back to my first bike because the clutch could not be fixed in the time we had left in the session. That's life. I have to concentrate on tomorrow and keep my mind focussed on the warm-up and the race, but I don't have a crystal ball so I don't know what will happen."
"I am happy to be in the front row because I have improved a lot compared to yesterday. I kept the provisional pole for a long time, but lost it towards the end when I got stuck behind some slower riders on the track. I know I could have gone faster and got the pole position, but I am happy where I am. I think it will be difficult tomorrow but as always I will try my best and hopefully get another race win."
