Sykes tops first day of WSBK testing at Phillip Island

Kawasaki's Tom Sykes was fastest overall after the two sessions of the first World Superbike testing day at Phillip Island.

The 2013 champion, who was also quickest in the Jerez test, recorded the day's benchmark time in the second session, ending up two tenths ahead of his teammate Jonathan Rea.

Michael van der Mark, quickest in the first session, took third overall behind the Kawasaki duo, more than four tenths behind Sykes.

The 23-year-old Dutchman was just ahead of fellow sophomore driver Jordi Torres and former MotoGP star Nicky Hayden.

The Yamaha duo of Sylvain Guintoli and Alex Lowes took sixth and seventh respectively, followed by Xavi Fores and Chaz Davies, the latter crashing out in the first test.

The Welshman ended up a tenth quicker than his teammate Davide Giugliano, with rookie Markus Reiterberger the last rider to dip below the 1m32s barrier.

The first of two days of testing was interrupted by the red flag several times, following crashes from MotoGP converts Karel Abraham and Alex de Angelis, as well as Josh Brookes, Peter Sebestyen and Dominic Schmitter.
