Muggeridge second in opening action.

Honda's Karl Muggeridge took second place in today's opening qualifying session for round five of the World Supersport championship here at the high-speed Monza circuit in Italy.

Muggeridge was at the head of the leaderboard with two minutes to go in the 45-minute session before being pipped by fellow Honda rider Fabien Foret.

"You've got to be lucky and get in someone's slipstream around here for a fast lap," explained Muggeridge. "When you're at 170mph for about 10 seconds on each straight you can soon gain some time that's what I did for my fast lap, behind a group of four riders."

He added: "I'm pleased with the progress we've made today. The motor feels strong and there's still a lot of changes we can make, especially to try and get the gearbox ratios right."

Muggeridge's team-mate John McGuinness on his first visit to Monza ended the day in 27th place as the British rider makes his comeback from pneumonia.

"I ended up going around in circles and getting nowhere this afternoon," admitted McGuinness. "I'm still learning the circuit but it's frustrating knowing there's about five second a lap to be had. I'll be having a think overnight and get on the pace tomorrow."
