Jonathan Rea was almost three tenths quicker than Sykes after the first half of the session, the duo holding first and second closely followed by Ducati duo Chaz Davies and Davide Giugliano as well as Yamaha's Alex Lowes.

Although Davies was the first to lower the benchmark in the second stint, Rea went seven tenths quicker than the Ducati rider to retake the lead.

However, Sykes edged out his teammate by half a tenth, his 1m22.155s landing him his fourth consecutive pole position.

Rea settled for second with Davide Giugliano completing the front row.

Davies was two tenths slower than his teammate in fourth as the Ducati of Xavi Fores followed the team's factory bikes in fifth.

Local rider Nicky Hayden was just 0.009s slower than Fores in sixth, the former MotoGP contestant beating Jordi Torres by less than a tenth.

Italian duo Lorenzo Savadori and Niccolo Canepa took eighth and ninth respectively, the latter, who is standing in for the injured Sylvain Guintoli, narrowly beating his teammate Lowes.

Michael van der Mark and Leon Camier, both drivers advancing from Superpole 1, completed the second session's order.
