Italian rider Andrea Antonelli killed in WSBK crash at Moscow

Another weekend, another fatality in the racing world.

Andrea Antonelli was killed after a first lap crash under torrential rains in the FIM World Supersport race at Moscow Raceway, part of the World Superbike weekend.

The race was stopped and the Italian rider for the Go Eleven Kawasaki team was transported to hospital where it was announced that he had passed away from his head injury.

At the age of 25, Antonelli lost control on the back straight and due to the extreme weather conditions on a slippery surface, the Italian went down and Lorenzo Zanetti could not avoid hitting his fellow competitor.

The Honda rider was unharmed in the crash.

The remaining races, including the second Superbike race were canceled by the organizers, FIM and Dorna.

Antonelli was one of the top riders, and at the last event in Imola, the Italian finished seventh. However, it was his outgoing personality that endeared him to his fans and fellow riders. After Imola, he said: “I'm happy with my performance, however, and hope to have paid off, and amused my Fan Club with this good performance.”

The team would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Antonelli.
