Ducati rider Ben Bostrom sets the fastest time on the opening day of qualifying at the Kyalami circuit in South Africa while Michelin's Colin Edwards (Castrol Honda - Michelin) and Tady Okada (Castrol Honda - Michelin) take up provisional front row grid positions on their VTR

Former American superbike champion Bostrom set the fastest lap in the closing stages of the opening one-hour session with veteran Italian Pier Francesco Chili - riding at a track where he won twice in 1998 - moving into second place aboard a Suzuki.

Defending champion Edwards ended an extraordinary day in third place and used just two Michelin rear race tyres all day. The 27-year-old said: "I wanted the machine to be set up under race conditions so we decided to run each of today's one-hour sessions on just one rear tyre and it worked out well for us."

Edwards and his team-mate Okada will both have the benefit of a Michelin Superpole tyre during Saturday's final qualifying action.

Troy Bayliss (Ducati Infostrada - Michelin) leads the provisional second row in fifth palce with the hard-riding Australian keen to secure a debut victory at the 2.65-mile circuit on the outskirts of Johannesburg on Sunday.

Series leader Troy Corser ended the Friday action in sixth place with Bayliss's team-mate Ruben Xaus (Ducati Infostrada - Michelin) seventh despite a crash at the end of the afternoon qualifying session.

Championship newcomer Stephane Chambon was eighth on his Suzuki while Kawasaki's Gregorio Lavilla finished ninth and Chambon's fellow Frenchman and series debutante Regis Laconi 10th.
