Ott Tänak stole the lead of the rally from Elfyn Evans after winning the first two special stages of the day. Sébastien Loeb had a troublesome start as he slid into a ditch in Castagniccia. Dani Sordo surprised himself after winning the ninth stage ahead of rally leader Ott Tänak.
