Bettega debuts in Focus WRC

2006 Fiesta SportingTrophy International Champion Alessandro Bettega will make his FIA World Rally Championship debut in a world rally car next week when he pilots a Ford Focus RS WRC06 at Rallye de France Tour de Corse.

It was announced in July, as part of his package for winning the 2006 FSTi series, he will enter the event under the banner of the Stobart VK M-Sport Ford rally team with support from his long-term partners, TRT La Scuderia.

Last year the Italian won the FSTi round in Corsica by a considerable margin and now, with his super1600 experience gained this year, will look to turn heads when he jumps behind the wheel of the Focus RS. In preparation for the event Bettega spent time at Ford's M-Sport base in northern England with Stobart driver Matthew Wilson testing the car at a local airfield.

Bettega's attack on Corsica will be aided by an expert team of mechanics from M-Sport spearheaded by Rally Engineer Tim Jackson. This will be his 13th WRC event but first with the top-level machinery.

Stages on Rally Corsica will be based in the west of the island around Rally Headquarters in Ajaccio. Competitors will tackle 359 kilometres of competitive action on this notoriously twisty and technical event surrounded by the majestic Mediterranean Sea.

2006 Fiesta SportingTrophy Champion Alessandro Bettega said:

"This will be a difficult rally because it is my first rally in the new car but I am really looking forward to starting the event. It's difficult to say how we will go because I don't have any experience in the car so it is hard to judge until we have done a few stages. It's not the local championship now, it's the WRC! There is not much sense for us to push hard right from the start, we will start by acquiring a feeling for the car and hopefully improve stage by stage. My goal for the event would be to improve on my times over each stage and make sure we get to the end to gain maximum experience in the Focus."
