Martin Prokop leaped into the lead of S-WRC championship
Martin Prokop and his co-driver Jan Tomanek driving Ford Fiesta S2000 finished Rally Mexico 2010 in second place of S-WRC cathegory. The Czech Ford National Team's crew leaped into the lead of championship.
Martin Prokop started the last leg of Rally Mexico from first position in S-WRC standings, nearly five seconds ahead of Xavier Pons with another Fiesta S2000. While the Spaniard was attacking hard today and took the risks, Czech driver continued steadily and saved his car. So he lost first position after the Sunday's opening stage, but than controlled second place and scored important points in Super 2000 World Rally Championship (S- WRC).
After giving his car a battering during Friday's competition, Prokop adopted a gentler approach today because he has to use the same car on the S-WRC round in New Zealand. However Czech Ford National Team's crew scored three fastest times on special stages (SS2, SS9 and SS18), led S-WRC standings from SS11 to SS18 and scored important points for second place in final S-WRC classifications. Thanks to this result leaped Martin and Jan in the lead of S-WRC championship, eight points ahead of Pons and Andersson. Moreover, Czech driver finished ninth in Rally Mexico overall classification and scored his first points in overall World Rally Championship standings.
Martin Prokop: "On Sunday ve were running exactly, how I had said already on Saturday evening. We didn't take any risks, just driving and trying to score important points. I am really happy, that we coped with so difficult rally without major problems, because many of our rivals were not so lucky. Once again I should praise the car and whole team, that had done great work here in Mexico."
"Xevi Pons showed, how great driver he is. He has big experience thanks to his starts with WRC cars. He will be definitely really strong competitor whole the season. Nasser Al- Attiyah had bad rally here in Mexico, but I thing, he will be really strong later in the season."
