The Xsara is keeping up !
"To be honest, I had a better day yesterday !" Tonight Guy Fréquelin is feeling a bit mixed up. Yesterday the Xsara of Sébastien Loeb - Daniel Elena dominated its rivals with six fastest times. Today in the Baumholder military camp, the young Citroën crew strongly resisted the attack of its followers heading back to Trier in first position with a lead of 10.1 seconds.
Due to the challenging terrain, and demanding conditions, the team faced difficult tyre choices. In a close and exciting battle for the lead, Loeb and the two World Champions who were chasing him, exchanged stage wins throughout the day.
The "Reds" did not start in the best way this morning with the retirement of Philippe Bugalski: "I felt a big shock in a rut, and thought we might have a puncture. I was not sure but we spun in the next bend. When hitting the side of the road, the oil breather pipe was crashed leading to a loss of power in the engine, which finally stopped".
Once again, Sébastien remained alone to defend Citroën's colours. And once again in this difficult context, the young French man kept stunning self-control, even when his lead came down to just six seconds. Seb' had a real "hot moment" in SS12 : "We hit a big rock in the inside of a right bend. The front axle was damaged from the schock, and made the car difficult to handle. Further in, we spun in sixth gear in a down-hill section. Fortunately I could get the car back on the road !"
Before the next service, Sébastien and Daniel still had to drive through the 21 kilometers of SS13, Erzweiler. Both managing this tricky situation and preserving their tyres, the crew performed extremely well by setting the fastest time, increasing their margin on Richard Burns 18,8s. In the second pass through Erzweiler, French team-mates recorded another stage win before a small mistake on the Super Special Stage of Sankt Wendel when they missed a junction.
