Even if they return from Sardinia with one more point, this rally will not be remembered as the most pleasant one for Antony Warmbold and Gemma Price.
As early as the first kilometres of the Rally, the Ford Focus crew found itself driving without active differentials. So Antony had to compose with an undrivable car, with which it was impossible to go fast into the corners. On this extremely twisty first edition of the Sardinia rally, the situation was far from being ideal.
The M-Sport team first chose to change the computer in charge of the Ford Focus chassis and electronic management, but the problem remained again. So Antony ran all first leg without diffs and electronics on his Ford. The team tried relentlessly to locate a possible short circuit within the car's
wiring loom during the 45 minutes service on Friday evening, but were unable to.
The second and third leg were quite the same, the car was completely inefficient and the only solution to improve a little bit the car's behaviour was to completely lock the diffs, in order to have a minimum of safety. As a consequence Antony adopted a survival rhythm, with which he and Gemma managed to finish in 8th position.
Back on tarmac in a few days for the Tour de Corse, a round that Antony appreciates, Warmbold and Price will try to forget this difficult Rally Italia...
Antony Warmbold : " All rally without diffs... it was a nightmare! The car did not turn at all; we had to stop in the hairpins! Impossible to go fast with such a problem! What is frustrating it is that we did not find where the problem was, I have to say that this "short circuit" that causes the "chassis computer" to burn could come from anywhere. We think that when the engine was changed before this event, a wire was pinched somewhere... but which one and where? The only reward is that we scored our third point in the WRC. Now I'm looking forward to Corsica... "
