Turkey: almost a first!

Over and above the fact that the forthcoming Rally of Turkey marks the final episode in the current trilogy of 'hot and rough' rounds, it's more the exact nature of the event that has occupied the minds of World Rally Championship drivers, teams and tyre manufacturers in recent weeks.

True, the vast majority of the WRC regulars became acquainted with the region of Antalya for the first time in 2003. But that inaugural visit took place at the end of winter. Snow and rain had fallen in abundance prior to the start, badly cutting up and rutting the rocky tracks perched high up in the mountains at altitudes in excess of 1,000 metres.

So what will competitors find this time round following the rally's switch to a new, early summer slot? To help answer that question, Michelin dispatched an observer to scout the area after the Acropolis Rally and the signs are that conditions are likely to be much more consistent this year. "The organisers have levelled and packed at least 80% of the route," reports Aim
