Total domination by Auriol and Sainz in the New Zealand rain

Didier Auriol produced a dazzling drive at the head of the field to extend his lead during the second day of the 1998 Rally of New Zealand. The Toyota Castrol Team Corolla WRC driver, partnered by Denis Giraudet, was fastest on five of the day's eight stages to hold a lead of 30 seconds over team-mates Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya. The two Corolla WRC's were never beaten on the gravel roads north of Auckland, despite torrential rain which caused the cancellation of two stages. The whole field was given an extra 45 minutes to reach the overnight halt following delays caused by flooding.

"Being the first car on the road here can often be a disadvantage but, with the wet weather that we've had today, that hasn't been a problem," said Auriol. "We had a very good day today, even though the rain made some of the stages very slippery and difficult. It was important to maintain total concentration so that we could build-up as much of an advantage as possible before tomorrow's long stages. I'm quite confident with everything and hope that the roads don't become too dry." Auriol also had reason to thank Michelin's ATS mousse system, which kept two tyres inflated in stages 12 and 13 after the wheels were damaged by rocks in the road.

Team-mate Sainz was quickest on three of the stages round Maungaturoto as he moved 14.5 seconds clear of third placed Richard Burns, giving a one-two position for the two Toyotas. "It is not so bad but of course it would be good to be one place higher. The first two stages tomorrow are the longest ones in the rally and will play an important part in determining the result of the event," said the double World Champion.

Toyota Motorsport's President Ove Andersson was delighted with the team's progress and commented: "Both Didier and Carlos have driven superbly in conditions which have been very difficult. To win every stage is a tribute to their ability and the work of the team. But there is still over 50% of the rally to run so anything could happen."

Remarks: General: stage delayed. Weather: heavy rain and winds. Road conditions: slippery, unpredictable. Auriol: "We had a lot of trouble trying to get through the stage and there were a lot of spectators." Sainz: "For me when it is raining it is better to be the first car." Gronholm: engine misfire led to a terminal engine problem, stopped before service; retired. Radstrom: Finished stage right behind Gronholm. Kankkunen: "It was muddy and getting muddier for us." Liatti: "The road just slipped down in front of us and we had to drive over a small tree. McRae: "You can't drive when you can't see." Team manager David Lapworth: "The car seems to be a bit wet inside, but it's the side windows and the edge of the screen he's complaining about: It's hot and wet in there." Makinen: "Not so good. It's getting more muddy on the road after every car and it's very slippery. It's very bad. We can only wait for sunshine." Bourne: "More than happy with the stage. I think we did a good time."
