A superb fourth place for Loeb.
The Xsara of Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena returned to the finish in fourth position, where they were lying since yesterday's second leg. With this fantastic result in their first outing in the "Kiwi" event, the young French team-mates score five precious points for Citroën in the Manufacturers' Championship.
Carlos Sainz and Marc Marti did not give up after they went off the road and lost some time yesterday. Fully committed to their job, they finished the rally and helped the technical team to carry out some tests on the car.
Sébastien Loeb was extremely pleased in Auckland on Sunday night : "This fourth place makes me happy for the team, but also for myself. My target was to get in the points for my first participation here. I've done it. I am also satisfied that I could set comparable times to my team-mates who know the terrain really well. For sure, we had very "hot" moments with Daniel in the car. It's obvious regarding the speed we attack the stages, but I should say that it was an intense pleasure to drive here. The New Zealand routes are some of the most beautiful in the Championship."
Carlos Sainz was a bit less enthustiastic, but the Spaniard returned to the finish once again. "It's true that after yesterday it was difficult to keep my complete motivation. But in every rally and in all circumstances it's worth competing until the end. We were able to try different set-ups, and I am happy that we could help the team to progress then."
"As testing is forbidden outside Europe the last teams to join the WRC have to go through this "discovery phase" explained team boss Guy Fréquelin. "Given this, our result is a success. Thanks to Seb's good rally we score 5 points, and I am extremely satisfied with this. Our cars performed well, getting close to the leaders but we still have work to do on the chassis and on the engine. The reliability of the car was there except for the gearbox problem of Sébastien this morning. I don't forget either the challenge for Carlos and Colin when their windscreens misted. This overseas adventure worked perfectly on a logistics point of view, and to be 100% satisfied I only miss a second car in the points".
