M-Sport celebrates 100th WRC event on Rally Mexico

M-Sport today celebrated its 100th world rally start as the action began on the third round of the 2004 FIA World Rally Championship in Mexico. The British-based team took over the running of Ford's world rally programme at the start of the 1997 season and Corona Rally Mexico marks a century of unbroken competition for the team.

Three members of the team have attended all 100 rallies and they were honoured during Ford's pre-event meeting in the rally base at Leon yesterday afternoon. Team director Malcolm Wilson, co-ordination manager John Millington and tyre engineer George Black were each presented with an exclusive framed cartoon, the work of renowned British motorsport artist Jim Bamber. Other team members joined in the celebrations with a special cake to mark the anniversary.

The M-Sport and Ford partnership has claimed 15 victories in the previous 99 world rallies, two with Ford Escort Cosworth World Rally Cars and 13 with Ford Focus World Rally Cars, the model which the team is successfully running in the 2004 championship.

"It was a well-kept secret and a big surprise to me," said Wilson. "There are several team members who have attended more than 90 events but just three of us who have reached the 100 mark. John Millington and George Black are incredibly dedicated to their jobs and have played a huge part in the team's success so I'm delighted to be able to share this occasion with them. All I hope now is that we can mark our centenary by claiming our 16th victory."
