Shakedown: results and remarks
Olbia, April 28th 2005 -- This morning the crews that entered the Rally Italia Sardinia were able to test the last set up of their cars on a gravel stage of 4.3 km in La Crucitta area, approximately 20 km from Olbia Service Park.
There were a lot of spectators and they were able to see the protagonists of the rally. The times scored today are just indicative because most of the drivers were setting up the car.
Petter Solberg (Subaru Impreza Wrc) scored the best time. The Norwegian driver World Rally Champion in 2003, was very fast. "I will attack from the beginning" he told us at the end of the shakedown the Norwegian Champion " from the first special stage even if I have the handy-cap to be first on the road. I'm confident , our tyres work fine, so I believe we will be able to reduce our gap with our direct rivals. The only important thing is winning and I want to double last year result, thanks also to the help of Terenzio Testoni, Sardinian technician of Pirelli.
The second best time was cored by Marcus Gronholm (Peugeot 307 Wrc). The Finns driver at the end of the shakedown seemed quite satisfied. "Several persons think I am tipped to win," says the Finns driver. "It's going to be a tough race for everybody. During recognitions we found a lot of humps, and this is going to be stressful for cars. We think we've found the right set up for the 307 and therefore we are quite confident. We will attack but with intelligence. We have to be cautious because immediately out of the road there are stones which might damage the tyres".
Among the fastest drivers also Rovampera(Mitsubishi),Loeb(Citroen), Atkinson (Subaru) and Gigi Galli (Mitsubishi).
Here below some remarks :
Sebastien Loeb (Citroen Xsara Wrc): "I am among the favoured, but this doesn't bother me. We were able to find a good set up for the car and thanks to Michelin we will be very competitive. There are several nice special stages, for instance Crastazza, mamone, and San Giacomo".
Gigi Galli (Mitsubishi Lancer Wrc) "My dream will be to win in front of my public , but we have to keep our feet on the ground. We have to work, race after race in order to improve and set up the car at its best. We would try to get close to the top of the classification. The route is nice but also difficult"
Markko Martin (Peugeot 307 Wrc): "The race is very similar to last year. I'll try to do my best even if there are a lot of humps and the suspensions will be under stress"
Francois Duval (Citroen Xsara Wrc): " The route is wider then last year, even if there are still too many stones . It is important to drive with caution. After the good result in New Zealand I'm confident also for this race"
Janne Tuohino (Skoda Fabia Wrc): "We did some tests last year in Sardinia. We saw that the car is going well. It is the first time I drive here and I know it won't be an easy".
