Kubica safely through day three

Robert Kubica still had to master the art of caution with ruts.

RK M-Sport World Rally Team’s Robert Kubica was back on the legendary stages of Rally Finland today. Having had to accept Rally 2 regulations during yesterday’s opening speed test (SS5), the Pole was back in the forests and determined to make the most of his Finnish world rally car debut.

Despite having to contend with slippery conditions as the first car on the road, the Formula One race winner was pleased with his driving through the opening loop and rapidly climbed the overall classification.

There was a more level playing field for the second pass, but Robert still had to master the art of caution with ruts, holes and rocks lying in wait to snare the inexperienced. Rising to the challenge in the rougher terrain, the Ford Fiesta RS WRC driver produced a clean run whilst simultaneously upping his pace considerably.

Most importantly however, the Pole was able to secure some vital experience – better comprehending the speed and performance of a top-specification rally car on one of the FIA World Rally Championship’s most specialised events.

Robert Kubica (38th):  “Today was a good day – a good learning process. We were the first car on the road so this morning we were cleaning quite a lot as there was a lot of loose gravel on the surface but it was a good experience and I was happy with my driving.

“On the second loop there was still a bit of cleaning but nowhere near as much. The grip levels between the first and second passes were completely different and that was something that I have never experienced before so again that was a good thing to learn.

“There are still some misfires in the engine, but even so I think we have had a very good day and learnt a lot along the way. If we continue tomorrow as we have today then I think we can be happy.”

Team Principal, Malcolm Wilson OBE:  “After the disappointment of yesterday Robert [Kubica] was really pleased to be back on the stages today and I think that it is fair to say that he has learnt more today than he has at any other rally.

“He’s had a good clean run with no issues and his pace has improved considerably throughout the day which is very encouraging. I’m sure he’ll be going to bed tonight in a much happier mood.”
