Hirvonen's rally goes up in flames

Mikko Hirvonen's Ford Fiesta will not be able to continue after a massive fire destroyed the car earlier today.

The 2012 Rally Italia winner Mikko Hirvonen was hoping for a repeat performance this weekend but that is no longer possible. Earlier today, he and his co-driver stopped to change the tires on their Ford Fiesta. They then noticed flames at the rear of the car as they returned to the rally.

The duo immediately stopped to battle the flames which intensified by the second. They desperately used fire extinguishers in an attempt to salvage the car but their efforts were to no avail. The flames grew stronger and completely engulfed the car. The two walked away from scene, dejected and shocked by the untimely end to their once-promising rally.

Hirvonen and the M-Sport team were leading Rally Italia after the super special stage last night and were running sixth when the fiery incident occurred between the third and fourth stages. Below is a photo from the WRC Twitter page showing what remains of the charred car and it's not much.
