Al-Attiyah exits WRC2 to focus on Olympics preparation

Two-time WRC2 champion Nasser Al-Attiyah will not defend his title in 2016, instead opting to concentrate on preparations for the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The 45-year-old driver won his first WRC2 title in 2014 and defended it this year, winning three rallies along the way.

However, the Qatari – a bronze medalist in the 2012 London Summer Games in clay pigeon shooting – has made his Olympics campaign a priority for next year.

While speaking to, Al-Attiyah's source confirmed the Qatari driver will still be active in motorsport in 2016 – and is expected to take part in World Rallycross rounds.

He will also compete in the Dakar Rally, the Silk Way Rally, the Middle East Rally Championship and the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup.
