'Dude' Regains Points Lead By Winning Devil's Bowl Prelim By Richard Day MESQUITE, TX (March 26) - When the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series opened the 26th Annual Spring Nationals at Devil's Bowl Speedway Friday, Danny Lasoski and Steve Kinser were hovering atop the point standings. When the qualifying session started, however, they headed in opposite directions. Lasoski got off to a quick start, pacing the qualifying session and receiving his fourth Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season. He also won the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race and passed former Devil's Bowl track champion Gary Wright for the lead with 2 1/4 laps remaining to win the Preliminary Feature. The $5,000 victory gave "The Dude" a 13-point lead over the series' 15-time champion in the standings. "Gary was in the spot I wanted to run," Lasoski said. "Running the bottom, if you missed it a little, you lost a lot of ground. He did a good job, but he got hung behind a lapped car and we got by him. I just thank God we're here." Kinser, the defending Spring Nationals champion, wasn't nearly as fortunate. An ignition problem in his #11 Quaker State Maxim kept him from taking a qualifying lap, which forced to start at the rear of the field in every race for the remainder of the program. Kinser's sixth-place finish in the Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race put him in the "C" Feature. Kinser raced into second place from outside the seventh row in the "C" Feature, which gave him the distinction of starting outside the eighth row in the "B" Feature. "The King of the Outlaws" passed 12 cars in the "B" to qualify for the evening's main event. Kinser, winner of 10 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Features at the Devil's Bowl, raced into 16th place from outside the 12th row. In all, he passed 37 cars in four races. Wright raced around Channellock Dash winner Jimmy Carr in the fourth corner as the green flag fell in the Preliminary Feature. Lasoski and Mark Kinser, who started on the second row, passed Carr during the fifth lap. Wright, who has won three Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Features at Devil's Bowl Speedway, was six car-lengths ahead of Lasoski when he entered lapped traffic three laps later. "The Dude" caught Wright in dense traffic during lap 13, but was unable to surge ahead. Lasoski pressured Wright for 5 1/2 laps before steering the #83 Beef Packers Eagle deep into the fourth corner to execute the winning pass. Mark Kinser passed Wright for second with 1 1/2 laps remaining, but was a half-straightaway behind when Lasoski took the checkered flag. "Our car was good high and low tonight," Lasoski said. "I think you could go faster up on top and you if you missed the bottom a little bit, you just sat there. "It's really early in the year. If we stay consistent, we have a shot at the championship. Steve Kinser, Mark Kinser ... all these guys are great racers and you know it's going to be a fight all the way to the end." Wright and Joey Saldana finished third and fourth to claim the final two automatic qualifying positions in Saturday's Channellock Dash. Carr crossed the finish line fifth, ahead of 10th-starting Travis Whitney, Donnie Crawford, Tim Shaffer, Frankie Kerr and Stevie Smith. "I got caught behind a lapped car and I lost my momentum," Wright said. "I saw him, but there wasn't anything I could do. These guys are awful tough. We just hung in and finished third. We're locked into Saturday's Channellock Dash, which is the main thing." Sammy Swindell, another 10-time winner at the Devil's Bowl, won the "B" Feature. He allowed his #1 Channellock Stealth to spin in turn four as the leaders took the checkered flag and was credited with an 18th-place finish. WoO
