CONCORD, NC (May 25) -- The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series and Mother Nature can't seem to get in synch during live telecasts on TNN: The National Network.
Rain forced the series to postpone a Preliminary Feature for the second time in a week Friday. This time, the teams completed six tough laps in the Chip Thunder Outlaws Showdown Presented by Lance Snacks at The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway before the rain hit. The series will run the final 24 laps of the Preliminary Feature Saturday following the feature program's qualifying session.
Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser collided with Butch Schroeder on front straightaway and flipped within seconds after the green flag fell in the Preliminary Feature. Danny Wood hit Kinser and flipped, while Billy Wilburn spun in turn one and Randy Hannagan collided with Third O'Reilly Heat Race winner Kyle Sauder.
Dale Blaney burst into the lead from outside the front row as the green flag replaced the red. Danny Lasoski, who started outside the third row, steered NASCAR Winston Cup star Tony Stewart's #20L J.D. Byrider Eagle into the high groove between the first and second corners to pass fast-qualifier and First O'Reilly Heat Race winner Donny Schatz for third place early in the opening lap.
Blaney's #10 U.S. Print/MBNA/Mopar Maxim turned sideways and flipped late in the first lap, giving the lead to poles-sitter Daryn Pittman. Wood and Sauder returned to the race during the red period.
Pittman slid out of the low groove in turn four as the race resumed, allowing Lasoski to take the lead. Schroeder collided with Phil Gressman in the second corner early in the second lap, and flipped Junior Holbrook's #8H Maxim. Kinser drove the #5M Mopar Maxim back into the race following the red period. Mechanical problems in the #15 Parker Stores Maxim allowed seven cars to pass Schatz on the ensuing restart.
Defending World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion Craig Dollansky took the high line through the third and fourth corners to pass Pittman late in lap three. Stevie Smith, who used a provisional to start the Preliminary Feature, hit the wall and stopped in the first corner several seconds later.
Dollansky lost third place when the #7 Polydome Maxim suffered a blown engine, causing him to stop on the front straightaway early in the sixth lap. Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidates Brad Furr and Jason Meyers collided in turn one on the restart, causing Meyers to flip before the rain hit Lowe's Motor Speedway's semi-banked, 4/10- mile clay oval.
"B" Feature winner Andy Hillenburg raced into third place from outside the ninth row, while three-time Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion Sammy Swindell passed 11 cars from outside the eighth row during the first six laps.
