Sammy Swindell is King for a Day at Eldora By Richard Day ROSSBURG, OH (July 17) - Sammy Swindell has epitomized the agony of defeat and thrill of victory during the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series races televised on TNN Motorsports the last two Saturdays. The three-time series champion's face was full of despair as he climbed from his #1 Channellock Stealth after a collision with a lapped car sent him over the retaining wall at Red River Valley Speedway July 10th. A week later, Swindell couldn't have been happier as he walked up the red-carpeted steps to the Mopar Kings Royal stage at Eldora Speedway where Earl Baltes to handed him a $50,000 check. "I hope this is what we need to get some momentum going," Sammy said after taking a reverse parade lap. "We've had a fast car all year long, but we've also had some problems and fallen out of a few races when we were running up front. I just hope we can keep it up go and get a few more. I'd like to win another race here in a few weeks (the $100,000-to-win Historical Big One)." The victory was Swindell's fifth in a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature this season and the second Mopar Kings Royal title in his career. He also won the prestigious race in 1992. The lapped traffic that plagued Swindell at Red River Valley the week before was his friend at the Mopar Kings Royal. He lapped 20 of the 26 cars in the field and took the checkered flag with 7.4 seconds to spare despite running out of fuel as he approached the finish line. Swindell, the third-fastest qualifier in the 53-car field, won the Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race from outside the third row. He started the main event inside the second row after following Daryn Pittman and Johnny Herrera across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. Pittman drove the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the 40-lap "A" Feature. He was comfortably ahead of Herrera when an engine malfunction forced Sixth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Andy Hillenburg to stop in the first corner early in the third lap. Swindell took the high line around Herrera into second place two laps after the green flag replaced the yellow and was within .7 seconds of Pittman when they entered lapped traffic during lap 11. Sammy dropped into the low groove in the first corner and almost collided with Pittman as he passed him for the lead two laps later. Sammy immediately started building an insurmountable advantage. Former Mopar Kings Royal champions Steve Kinser and Herrera passed Pittman for second and third place during the 14th and 15th laps, respectively. Tim Shaffer, who won the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature at Eldora on June 5th, brought out the second and final caution flag when a blown engine in the #11H Vivarin Eagle forced him to stop in the fourth corner late in lap 16. Tyler Walker, who took a provisional and started inside the 13th row, raced past 12 cars during the first 16 laps. He was in eighth place when a mechanical malfunction in the #35 Air Sep Maxim forced him to coast into the pits with eight laps remaining. Swindell, who turned laps of 125 m.p.h. around the high-banked, 1/2-mile oval during the late stages of the race, was more than half a lap ahead of Kinser when he took the checkered flag. "The Channellock car was just awesome tonight," Sammy said. "We were actually a little too hooked up early in the race, but the track came to us." Herrera finished third, ahead of Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Mark Kinser, Stevie Smith, Second NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Jeff Shepard, Paul McMahan, Pittman, Jeff Swindell and Danny Lasoski. Donny Schatz drove the #15 Parker Stores Maxim past seven cars to finish in 15th place. Mark Kinser, the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader, received his 19th Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season for pacing the qualifying session with a 12.996-second, 138.504-m.p.h., lap. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series will be back in action Monday at LaSalle Speedway, Wednesday at Knoxville Raceway, Friday at State Fair Motor Speedway and Saturday at I-55 Raceway. WoO
