Sammy Swindell Wins, Earns Wirtgen Pole By Richard Day LAS VEGAS, NV (November 2) - It's much easier to contrast than compare Sammy and Jeff Swindell. While the brothers have drastically different personalities, they share an intense desire to win races. Twenty-four hours after Jeff won the opening-night feature, Sammy was in victory lane at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Tuesday after winning the second preliminary feature in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Presented by Wirgten. His fourth preliminary feature victory of the year gave him the pole position in Wednesday's main event. "The Channellock car was running good," Sammy said. "We had a late number, but it worked out for the best. The car was good all night." TNN Motorsports will televise Wednesday's feature racing program live, starting at 11 p.m. eastern time. Sammy, who set Las Vegas Motor Speedway's qualifying standard on opening night, was the 15th-fastest qualifier in Tuesday's 75-car field. He won the Second NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race, then earned the right to start the 20-lap feature on the pole by winning the Channellock Dash. Outside polesitter Craig Dollansky collided with Swindell trying to make a quick move into the low groove as the green flag fell in the preliminary feature. Third-starting Danny Wood, James Chesson, P.J. Chesson, Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser, Andy Hillenburg and Johnny Herrera were also involved in the fourth- corner crash. Wood, P.J. Chesson and Hillenburg flipped, but only Dollansky and the Chesson brothers were unable to restart. Swindell burst into the lead as the green flag replaced the red. Danny Lasoski, battling Kinser down to the final event for the series' 1999 championship, moved ahead three rows after the crash and raced into seventh place during the opening lap. Swindell maintained a comfortable advantage over Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Joey Saldana early, and was four car-lengths ahead when he entered lapped traffic midway through the race. Wood took the leaders out of lapped traffic three laps later when the top wing collapsed on the #21W Pepsi Maxim, forcing him to stop in the fourth corner. Defending and 15-time Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion Steve Kinser started outside the seventh row. He passed four cars during the first half of the race, then took ninth place from Brooke Tatnell with an inside move in turn one as the race resumed. Swindell controlled the restart and quickly put several car- lengths between himself and his closest pursuers as Jeff Shepard and Stevie Smith challenged Saldana for the runner-up spot. Saldana narrowed the gap when the leaders caught the backmarkers again as the white flag fell, but was two car-lengths behind when Swindell took the checkered flag. "There weren't many places to get by the lapped cars tonight," Sammy said. "It was tough to get a good lead. "We're glad to finish the season strong. We've had a good car quite a bit. We've just had problems and fell out of a lot of races. We've been trying some new things the last month or so and some of them have worked out." Shepard finished in third place, ahead of Smith, Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Paul McMahan, Lasoski, Donny Schatz, Steve Kinser, Randy Hannagan and Tatnell, who started outside the ninth row. "The Dude" entered Wednesday's season finale 61 points out of first place in the point standings. Schatz, the runner-up the opening-night feature, outscored Saldana by two points for the outside pole position in Wednesday's Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Presented by Wirtgen championship feature. Hillenburg passed 11 cars in the "B" Feature to earn the next-to- last qualifying position in the evening's main event. He moved into a ninth-place tie in the point standings with 1999 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Tim Shaffer by finishing 15th. Saldana received his 10th Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season after pacing the qualifying session with a 14.347-second, 125.462- m.p.h., lap around the semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. WoO
