Mark Kinser Dominates Eldora Make-up Race By Richard Day ROSSBURG, OH (July 15) - The #5M Mopar Maxim didn't appear to be running on all cylinders early in Thursday's the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' make-up race at Eldora Speedway. Series points leader Mark Kinser was second-quick in qualifying - more than .250 seconds off the single-lap record he set at the high- banked, 1/2-mile oval in early June - and finished second in the Second NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race. Kinser, who had won only one "A" Feature at Eldora before Thursday, was the class of the field after his father, crew chief and car owner, Karl Kinser, replaced the engine in the #5M. Mark raced to victory from outside the third row in the Channellock Dash, then led all 30 laps in the main event. "This Mopar car was just unbelievable tonight," Mark said. "We're probably more prepared for this weekend than we've ever been before, even more than the (Amoco Knoxville) Nationals. The Mopar people are all here, and that's important to us. "I ran here for a long time and only won one race. Dad had a lot of success here with Steve (Kinser), but that setup wasn't necessarily one I'm comfortable with. We've gone back and forth trying to find a happy medium, but I think we may have hit on something tonight." Kinser burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event, and started opening a comfortable advantage as 1996 Kings Royal champion Johnny Herrera battled Andy Hillenburg for second place. Herrera drove the #1BK Networks Eagle into the low groove in the third corner to pass Hillenburg late in the seventh lap, and was 1.4 second behind Kinser when the leaders entered lapped traffic the next time around. Steve Kinser passed Hillenburg with an inside move in turn four late in lap eight, and joined the leaders in dense lapped traffic within two laps. Herrera took the low line into the fourth corner to pass Kinser for the lead late in the 13th lap, only to have Brooke Tatnell stop in turn four with a flat left rear tire and bring out the caution flag. Kinser restarted ahead of the field and controlled the restart. Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Daryn Pittman and Tyler Walker passed Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Danny Lasoski for sixth and seventh place, respectively, during the race's middle stages. Defending Kings Royal champion Jac Haudenschild surrendered 12th place when he stopped in turn four with a blown engine late in lap 16. Kinser was approaching the backmarkers again with 8 1/2 laps remaining when the caution flag fell for debris in the fourth corner. Walker lost 10th place when the #35 Air Sep Maxim hit the retaining wall and flipped as the race resumed. Pittman's engine lost power seconds later, forcing him to surrender sixth place. Kinser opened a comfortable advantage soon after the green flag replaced the red, and was 1.3 seconds ahead of Herrera when he took the checkered flag in his 13th "A" Feature victory of the season. "I think the problem in traffic was pretty much driver error," Mark admitted. "I was making some wrong moves and it broke down our momentum. Johnny would have been tough to beat if he would have stayed ahead of me. "I didn't know we were going that fast (13.5-13.6-second laps during the race's late stages). Again, that's a testament to my crew." Steve Kinser finished in third place, ahead of Sammy Swindell, Hillenburg, 14th-starting Stevie Smith, Lasoski, Frankie Kerr, Jeff Shepard and "B" Feature winner Greg Hodnett. Pittman received his second Vivarin Fast-Time Award of his rookie season for pacing the 37-car qualifying session with a 13.015-second, 138.302-m.p.h., lap around "The World's Fastest Half-Mile." The race was originally scheduled for April 3rd, but was postponed due to rain. WoO
