Mark Kinser Extends Las Vegas Winning Streak By Richard Day

LAS VEGAS, NV (March 5) - Mark Kinser sure knows how to treat a sponsor. He won the 1996 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series championship and led the series in Vivarin Fast-Time Awards all four years Wirtgen was his primary sponsor. In the last week, he has treated his new sponsor - Mopar - to its first two feature victories with the world's premier sprint car racing series. Mark recorded Mopar's second victory Friday when the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series opened the Third Annual Silver State Shootout at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The $5,000 victory was Mark's fifth straight at Las Vegas' semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. "We have some of the Mopar guys, plus Ray Williams and some of the Wirtgen people here, and it's great to win one for all of them," Mark said. "Our plan is to get a win on TV tomorrow (Saturday) night and get the Mopar parts people all the publicity we can." Saturday's Silver State Shootout finale will be televised live on TNN Motorsports, beginning at 10 p.m. eastern time. Darrell Waltrip's Racers show (9 p.m.) will feature the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series. "There's a lot of die-hard Mopar fans out there - a lot more than I even realized - and it feels good to be able to run this well for them," Kinser added. The #5M Mopar team survived a rather rocky opening night at Kings Speedway two weeks ago, but hasn't finished worse than second in a feature race since. After five of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 105 scheduled race dates, Mark ranks fourth in the standings. Kinser, the seventh-fastest qualifier in the 61-car field, won the Second NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race and earned the right to start the Preliminary Feature on the pole by winning the Channellock Dash from outside the second row. Outside polesitter Joe Gaerte drove the #8H Energy Release Eagle around Mark as the green flag fell to take the early lead in the evening's main event. Sammy Swindell raced into 12th place from outside the 10th row during the opening lap. Travis Whitney's fourth-corner spin brought out the caution flag early in the second lap. Jimmy Carr drove the #21 PC Joey J&J into the pits during the caution period, but didn't take the green flag when the race resumed. Kinser was challenging Gaerte for the lead when Tyler Walker and Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner P.J. Chesson collided in the first corner early in lap three. Both cars flipped, but neither driver sustained injuries in the crash. Carr returned to the race as the green flag replaced the red. Kinser took the low line through turns three and four as the race resumed to pass Gaerte for the lead. Gaerte raced wheel-to-wheel with Mark on the back straightaway the next time around, but was unable to regain first place. Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Danny Lasoski steered the #83 Beef Packers Eagle deep in the third corner to pass Gaerte for the runner-up spot late in the sixth lap. Kinser was two seconds ahead of Lasoski when he entered lapped traffic the next time around. Johnny Herrera took the low line through turns three and four to pass Gaerte for third midway through the race. Stevie Smith relegated Gaerte to fifth place three laps later. Defending Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion Steve Kinser claimed the final automatic qualifying position in Saturday's Channellock Dash with a first-corner pass of Smith early in lap 17. A back-straightaway collision with Swindell late in the 19th lap sent Carr into the outside retaining wall. Carr turned a 360 and managed to keep the car going as the green flag continued to fly. Racing through lapped traffic with ease, Mark doubled his comfort zone during the final six laps and took the checkered flag 4.4 seconds ahead of Lasoski. "Joe surprised us on the start, Kinser admitted. "He's running a different brand of tire, and maybe he found something there. "Danny closed a bit on us there, so maybe we're lucky to be standing here, but it feels good." Herrera and Steve Kinser finished third and fourth, respectively, ahead of Smith, 16th-starting Donny Schatz, Daryn Pittman, Swindell, Gaerte and Frankie Kerr. The Chesson brothers - P.J. and James - recorded the two fastest qualifying laps. P.J.'s 15.151-second, 118.804-m.p.h., earned him the first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of his career. WoO
