Perfect Night for Meyers: Sets Fast Time and Wins Breaking the VAULT Dashes
Concord, NC-- October 30 2008--Jason Meyers had a perfect start to the weekend in the second annual VAULT World Finals for the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway. He not only was fastest in both rounds of time trials for the event on Thursday night, but also swept every round of the inaugural 'Breaking the VAULT' dashes, defeating a total of nine drivers to claim the top prize.
The California native set fast time for the Friday night portion of the VAULT World Finals in the first round of time trials, with a lap of 12.293 seconds around the four-tenths mile. Daryn Pittman was second, with 20-time series champion Steve Kinser third, Ed Lynch Jr. fourth and Fred Rahmer fifth.
"We're very pleased right now," said Meyers. "We had a few things go our way and pulled a good number tonight. We have Charlie Garrett down here with a new development engine for next year and this thing is running great. Together with that and this great team that has been awesome all year it's a good start to the weekend. We are glad to be down here in Charlotte in front of our sponsors and the fans and we could not have asked for a better start to the weekend."
Meyers, who is second in the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series standings, still has a mathematical chance at winning the 2008 title, leads the series with 16 fast time honors this season aboard the GLR Investments KPC.
Meyers was also fastest in the second round of time trials, which set the line-ups for the Saturday night portion of the racing program. He turned a lap of 12.406 seconds to best the 46 cars that took time. Daryn Pittman was again second quick, with Ed Lynch Jr. third, Chad Kemenah fourth and Donny Schatz fifth.
"The car went around there really good in the second session," said Meyers. "That lap would have been fourth quick in the first session, so we are really happy."
Following time trials, 10 drivers took part in the 'Breaking the VAULT' dashes, which were match races, pitting one driver against the other. Five drivers were determined from the World of Outlaws standings, along with the fastest five drivers from time trials that accepted the challenge. The first eight rounds of the contest were one and a half laps in length, with the cars starting side-by-side on the back straightaway.
Meyers was chosen by two-time defending series champion Donny Schatz as his first round opponent. Schatz was given the first pick, being the current series point leader. In the first round, Meyers lined up on the outside in the match race and dove under Schatz in turns one and two to take the lead and ultimately the win.
In the second round, Meyers knocked off Joey Saldana. He followed that up with wins over Lucas Wolfe, Kraig Kinser, Ed Lynch Jr. and Daryn Pittman, setting up a final showdown with Jac Haudenschild.
The finale was 2 ½ laps in length, with Meyers again using the inside lane to get a strong start en route to defeating Haudenschild for a clean sweep of the 'Breaking the VAULT.' He won $1,000 for the finale along with $300 in each of the eight rounds for a grand total of $3,400.
"That's awesome for this whole team," said Meyers. "I don't know if that's an official clean sweep. That was fun. Everyone down here this weekend is working hard. This new engine from Charlie Garrett is working great. Hopefully the fans enjoyed. I want to thank the World of Outlaws and the track for putting it together."
