TULARE, CA (February 24) -- Brooke Tatnell made up for a disappointing qualifying time by driving the #2 Volcano Joe's Coffee Schnee past nine cars to finish eighth in Saturday's World of Outlaws "A" Feature at Thunderbowl Raceway.
"We're pretty happy with it," Tatnell said of his fifth top-11 finish in as many races this season. "We missed the inversion by one spot, but it was a pretty good time considering how late we went out and as close as the times were."
Tatnell was the 17th-fastest qualifier in the 41-car field, .389 seconds off Paul McMahan's pace. Brooke just missed qualifying for the 40-lap main event in the First Heat Race, finishing less than half a car-length behind McMahan.
"In the heat race, our car was working well on the bottom, where other people couldn't," Tatnell said. "We went into the fourth turn a little too hard (during the fifth lap) and missed the corner. We lost a few spots when we turned a 360 and had to work our way back. We only missed the transfer spot by a wheel, so we had to run the "B." We didn't want to be there, but we learned some things in that experience that helped us get ready for the feature race."
Tatnell qualified for the main event by winning the "B" Feature, beating Chad Hillier under the checkered flag by 1.1.09 seconds.
"Nobody wins races from back where we started (17th) any more, but we got up to seventh and finished eighth," Tatnell said. "We'll go home with eighth in the bag and be glad we've been so consistent. We'd like to keep our consistency, but just step it up a few more notches."
Tatnell raced into 10th place during the first 27 laps, and was challenging Kerry Madsen for ninth when his fellow Australian countryman stopped on the track with a broken shock absorber with nine laps remaining. Brooke moved ahead one position when Joey Saldana collided with Terry McCarl and flipped during lap 35. Tatnell held off 20-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser by 1.544 seconds to finish eighth.
"Larry (Woodward, the team's owner) is pretty happy right now," Brooke said. "He knows we're doing everything we can. We know we still have to step it up a little. We have a week now to get things more organized, so we should be ready for the races in Arizona. I think Larry realizes the guys we have together are jelling and getting things together. I think it's coming along quite nice. All in all, we're pretty happy with things."
The Volcano Joe's team heads into next weekend's races at USA Race Park in Tucson and Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix ranked sixth in the World of Outlaws point standings -- only four points behind Titan Racing and Karavan Motorsports and 48 out of the lead.
