Kaeding Runs Third at New Egypt Speedway
NEW EGYPT, NJ (May 20) -- Tim Kaeding recorded his fifth top-11 finish in seven races as the substitute driver in the #2 Volcano Joe's Coffee Schnee Sunday, racing into third place at New Egypt Speedway.
"We went out early and the track was still a little wet after all the rain we got," said Kaeding, who sat through a long rain delay. "We didn't qualify all that well, but we started on the front row of the heat race and finished in the top two to get into the dash, so that was a big plus.
"We're happy to come out of here with a top-three, and roll into Grandview and try to do the same thing -- but two spots higher. We struggled a little on the setup early in the night. We were loose, but they (Crew Chief Troy Renfro and Mechanic Rob Beattie) continued to work on it. We got the car real good toward the end of the feature. I think the track came to us at the end, and we just ran out of laps. If there had been five more laps, I think we could have won."
Kaeding's 122.808-MPH lap around New Egypt's semi-banked, ½-mile oval was .415 seconds off Jeremy Campbell's pace-setting time. As the 14th-fastest qualifier, Tim started on the pole in the Second Heat Race and finished second behind Jason Martin. The third-generation driver from San Jose earned the privilege of starting the 30-lap "A" Feature inside the third row by finishing fifth in the Crane Cams Dash.
Kaeding, who exchanged third place with Lucas Wolfe several times late in the race, caught winner Steve Kinser and runner-up Jason Sides as the checkered flag fell.
Kaeding and Woodward Racing will return to the World of Outlaws trail Wednesday in Bechtelsville, PA, for the Keystone Cup Challenge at Grandview Speedway.
