Mark Kinser Takes Williams Grove Opener By Richard Day MECHANICSBURG, PA (July 29) - Although he has a 105-point advantage in the point standings, Mark Kinser knows no lead is safe as competitive as the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series has become. Kinser, the series' 1996 champion, felt as much relief as joy Thursday when he led the final 1 1/4 laps to win the Preliminary Feature as the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series opened a $78,720 event at Williams Grove Speedway. "The Mopar car was really good again tonight," Mark said. "Getting locked in for tomorrow night is a tremendous relief. We don't have to worry about the heats. They're so competitive right now, anything can happen. Even though we've been qualifying well, I'd just as soon show up, watch to see what the track's going to do, then go racing." Kinser qualified very well Thursday, and was rewarded with his 22nd Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season. His 16.925-second, 106.352-m.p.h., lap around the legendary semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval was .263 seconds faster than second-quick Tyler Walker. He won the First NAPA Parts Heat Race from outside the third row and earned the right to start fourth in the feature by following Stevie Smith, Dave Ely and Lance DeWease across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. Smith drove his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit into the lead as the green flag fell in the Preliminary Feature. Kinser passed Ely for second place with an inside move in turn one early in the opening lap. DeWease passed Ely the next time around, before the right front wheel on the #12 Apple Chevrolet car broke, sending Greg Hodnett into the outside guard rail in the third corner late in lap three. Kinser made a run at Smith as the green flag replaced the yellow, but was unable to surge ahead. Stevie was seven car-lengths ahead by the time he entered lapped traffic as they completed the ninth lap. Walker took over the final automatic starting position in Friday's Channellock Dash by passing Ely for fourth place seconds later. Cris Eash stopped in turn three with a flat left rear tire late in the 11th lap, bringing out the caution flag and tightening the field. Sammy Swindell, winner of seven Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Features at Williams Grove, passed Steve Kinser and Ely during the 16th and 17th laps to claim fifth place. Mark kept pace with Smith after the restart, and steered the #5M Mopar Maxim into the low groove between the third and fourth corners to take the lead late in the 19th lap. He took the checkered flag with four car-lengths to spare. "I was giving it every thing I had," Mark said. "I saw an opportunity to take the line away from Stevie, and it worked. We have a couple of people from Mopar here tonight, and I'm glad we can win one for them." DeWease finished third, ahead of Walker, Swindell, Ely, Steve Kinser, "B" Feature runner-up Jeff Shepard, Donny Schatz and Danny Lasoski. Todd Shaffer, a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature winner at Selinsgrove Speedway on June 1, 1991, raced past 10 sprinters to finish in 14th place. Andy Hillenburg, who has qualified for 503 straight main events since the series visited Williams Grove Speedway on May 29, 1992, missed his third Preliminary Feature of the year. He was running fourth in the "B" Feature when his right rear tire exploded and damaged his #2 Luxaire J&J. He was unable to continue, and finished in 14th place. A small fire in the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim added injury to insult for Manufacturers Rookie of the Year candidate Daryn Pittman. A loose fuel line burned Pittman's ankles slightly during the "B" Feature, but he said he would be ready to race Friday. Pennsylvanian Kevin Gobrecht was missing from the event because Hylton/Blaney Motorsports decided to build several new #93 Amoco sprint cars for the upcoming big-money races.
