KINSER WINS AGAIN, THIS TIME AT WILLIAMS GROVE By Richard Day MECHANICSBURG, PA (May 26) - It didn't take Steve Kinser long to regain his winning touch on the World of Outlaws' tour. After warming up with four top-six finishes, "The King of the Outlaws" extended his hot streak Friday when a capacity crowd welcomed him back to Williams Grove Speedway. "These last three weeks, I've had more fun than I've had all year," said Kinser, who opened the season racing with NASCAR's Winston Cup series. "It's not easy putting a new team together from scratch, but we're doing pretty good. We have quality people." As was the case in the Skoal Outlaw Series' Pennsylvania opener Tuesday at Lernerville, it was Steve's cousin, Mark, who got off to a fast start. He received his seventh Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the season after circling the semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval in 18.289 seconds. Then he earned the right to start the main event on the pole by winning the five-lap Vivarin Dash in 1:34.5. "Mark's got Karl's car," Steve said, referring to his former car owner and crew chief, Karl Kinser. "When you have Karl wrenching for you, you're going to be fast. Karl's the best in the business." Mark drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the 30-lap "A" Feature. Steve pressured outside polesitter Lance DeWease for second place during lap two, and passed him high in the second corner the next time around. Mark was a half-straightaway ahead of Steve when he entered lapped traffic during the fifth lap, but lost the lead two laps later. As he attempted to pass Len Thompson and Mark Richard, Thompson turned sideways in front of him in turn one. Unable to find an escape route, Mark hit Thompson and spun to a stop. Steve's #11 Quaker State Maxim was at the front of the 24-car field when the green flag replaced the yellow. The red flag was flying three laps later, however, when Andy Hillenburg allowed his #2 STP J&J to hit the guard rail in the third corner. As he flipped into turn four, Hillenburg collected Mark, Joe Gaerte, Van Gurley, Jr., and his cousin, Lance Blevins. As the race resumed, Jeff Swindell raced past Danny Lasoski and his Two Winners Racing teammate, Greg Hodnett, to take over fourth place. Dave Blaney, who started on the eighth row, took himself out of fifth place when he allowed the #10 Vivarin J&J to hit the third-turn guard rail late in the 13th lap. Within seconds after the green flag replaced the yellow, DeWease passed Jac Haudenschild for second place. "The Wild Child" chased him down the back straightaway and threaded the #22 Pennzoil Maxim between DeWease and the inside guard rail to regain the spot. Kinser was eight car-lengths ahead of Haudenschild midway through the race when Randy Hannagan hit the guard rail in the third corner and collected Blevins. With the red flag flying, Blaney's and Hillenburg's crews managed to repair their cars in time for them to reenter the race. Within three laps of green-flag racing, Kinser opened a 10-car-length advantage. Swindell passed DeWease for third place during the 19th lap. Lasoski pressured Jeff for nine laps before driving the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim past him deep in the second corner with two laps remaining. Kinser was 10 car-lengths ahead of "The Wild Child" when he caught the backmarkers again during lap 23. Haudenschild was unable to make a run at the leader and was 10 car-lengths behind when Steve took the checkered flag. Lasoski held off Swindell to finish third. Hodnett, Stevie Smith, Fred Rahmer, Mark, DeWease and Todd Shaffer rounded out the top 10. Mark received his second Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award of the year for racing back into eighth place from the back of the pack.
