Kelly Kinser Takes West Plains Feature By Richard Day WEST PLAINS, MO (April 18) - Already considered a living legend with 15 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series championships, Karl Kinser added to his legendary status Friday at West Plains Motor Speedway. With his son, defending World of Outlaws champion Mark Kinser, attempting to qualify for Sunday's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series' race, Karl chose cousin Kelly Kinser to drive the #5M Wirtgen America Maxim. Kelly responded with his first World of Outlaws "A" Feature victory, passing Jac Haudenschild with 3 1/2 laps remaining. "This is a miracle," Kelly said in victory lane. "I don't know if it was luck or what, but we won the race. This is one helluva race car and a great team." Kelly was the fifth-fastest of six drivers qualifying faster than the previous one-lap record. Joe Gaerte received his third Channellock Fast-Time Award of the year after circling the semi- banked, 3/8-mile oval in 11.831 seconds. Gaerte's record run chopped .821 seconds off the standard Mark Kinser set last April. With the six fastest cars being inverted in the Vivarin Dash and Gaerte, Johnny Herrera and Danny Lasoski having problems in their heat races, Kinser earned the right to start the 30-lap main event inside the second row by following Dave Blaney and Donny Schatz across the finish line. Blaney burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature, only to have a collision involving Andy Hillenburg and Johnny Herrera between turns one and two send Hillenburg's #2 STP J&J flipping. After his crew replaced his damaged top wing, nose wing and steering arm, Andy restarted at the rear of the field. A second-corner collision sent Lasoski and Greg Hodnett spinning within seconds after the green flag replaced the yellow. Kinser passed Schatz as Blaney raced into the lead as the race resumed. In his haste to catch Kinser, Schatz started spinning in turn three. Although he kept the #15 Blue Beacon Gambler going and didn't bring out the caution flag, 13 cars raced past. Hillenburg was involved in another crash late in the second lap, as his collision with Lance Blevins knocked his cousin and the #21 Citgo J&J out of the race. Kinser was just inches from Blaney's rear bumper when the leaders entered lapped traffic during lap eight. Kelly tried to take the lead with a low move on the front straightaway the next time, but was unsuccessful. Stevie Smith passed Haudenschild for third with a high move through the first corner seconds later. Blaney opened a two-car-length advantage as Smith challenged Kinser for the runner-up spot during lap 11. "The Wild Child" regained third place with a low move in the fourth corner late in the 12th lap. Second-corner spins by Aaron Berryhill and Shane Stewart during the race's middle stages tightened the field. Haudenschild steered the #22 Pennzoil Maxim high into turn one to pass Kinser for second during the 16th-lap restart, then veered into the outside groove in the second corner to take the lead two laps later. Kinser used an inside move on the front straightaway to pass Blaney for the runner-up spot with 11 laps remaining. As the leaders approached lapped traffic two laps later, Kinser almost passed "The Wild Child" deep in the second corner. Haudenschild's right rear tire started losing air pressure with five laps remaining. Kinser won a back-straightaway drag race to take the lead midway through the 27th lap and was six car-lengths ahead of Blaney when he took the checkered flag. "The car really didn't suit me in the heat race or the dash," Kelly said. "It didn't feel like it would run around the right part of the track. We changed it and that was it, it just went." Jeff Swindell drove the #7TW Gold Eagle J&J past 12 cars to finish in third place. Completing the top 10 in the World of Outlaws' 10th "A" Feature of the season were Smith, Herrera, Sammy Swindell, new points leader Steve Kinser, Lasoski, First Heat Race winner Joey Saldana and Schatz. Rather than have his flat tire replaced and bring out the caution flag, "The Wild Child" raced as fast as he could on three good tires and finished 16th.
