Steve Kinser Takes Dirt Nationals Opener By Richard Day HARTFORD, MI (October 11) - Now matter where the U.S. Dirt Nationals is run, you can bet Steve Kinser will be racing among the leaders. "The King of the Outlaws" owned the event the first two years when it was run at the Terre Haute Action Track. Although cousin Mark Kinser won the event last October, Steve gained a measure of revenge Friday when the Skoal Outlaw Series opened the Fourth Annual U.S. Dirt Nationals at Hartford Speedway. Steve passed Mark early in the 14th lap, and won the Preliminary Feature with 10 car-lengths to spare. "We've been getting better," said Kinser, who hadn't won since the Wild Wild Northwest Tour finale at Southern Oregon Speedway on August 29th. "We finished second at Williams Grove last week. I just hope we can keep it going and get one here tomorrow (Saturday) night." Sammy Swindell, who won the First Quaker State Heat Race, made history long before the green flag fell in the feature. He was the fastest of the 51 cars taking time trials to break the one-lap record Mark Kinser set in the World of Outlaws' inaugural visit to the high-banked, 1/2-mile oval on May 19th. Although Mark's 19.382-second qualifying lap was run on an afternoon when the track was dry, Swindell's 16.048-second run - on a tacky track on a cool evening - was nonetheless outstanding. The record-setting effort earned Sammy his fifth EcoWater Quick-Time Award of the year. Mark, the second-fastest qualifier, earned the right to start the feature on the pole by beating Swindell across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. He drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the evening's main event. Dave Blaney, who is chasing Mark in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings, passed Jac Haudenschild for third place with a low move into turn two seconds later. Mark opened a 15-car-length advantage within three laps while cousin Steve and Haudenschild exchanged fourth place three times. As Mark continued to race away from the field, a front- straightaway collision involving former World of Outlaws Rookies of the Year Joe Gaerte (1989) and Andy Hillenburg (1988) sent Gaerte flipping early in the fourth lap. A broken front suspension also caused Lance Blevins to stop in turn four just seconds before the red flag was thrown. "The King of the Outlaws" started making his way toward the front of the field after he and Paul McMahan passed Haudenschild during the ensuing restart. While Sammy challenged Mark for the lead, Steve battled "The Buckeye Bullet" for third place. Mark was five car-lengths ahead of Swindell when Steve steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim deep into the fourth corner to pass Blaney for third late in lap seven. The leaders entered lapped traffic midway through the race. Two laps later, Steve won a front-straightaway drag race with Sammy to take over the runner-up spot. After his attempt to pass Mark was foiled by a backmarker late in the 13th lap, Steve came back with a low move in the first corner to take the lead seconds later. "The Buckeye Bullet" drove the #10 Vivarin J&J past Swindell on the front straightaway the next time around as Kinser quickly opened a 10-car-length advantage. Sammy slid out of the low groove in turn one as he attempted to regain third place with three laps remaining, allowing McMahan to pass him for fourth. He was victimized by Stevie Smith in the same spot the next time around, and narrowly beat Third Quaker State Heat Race winner Joey Saldana under the checkered flag for sixth place. "I think we found the rubber on the bottom sooner than anybody else," said Steve, who held off Mark to claim his fourth Preliminary Feature victory of the season. "We were making good time in the low groove." Johnny Herrera won the Fourth Quaker State Heat Race, then drove the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim past nine cars to finish 11th in the feature. Jeff Swindell suffered through a forgettable evening, finishing sixth in the Fifth Quaker State Heat Race and 10th in the "B" Feature. He was running second in the "B" when the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim lost the left side board of its top wing and started having handling problems.
