TNN: THE NASHVILLE NETWORK TO TELEVISE KNOXVILLE NATIONALS LIVE ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (February 16) - World of Outlaws Founder and President Ted Johnson joined Mark Kuchan, TNN's Director of Motorsports, to announce the biggest news in the series' 17-year history Thursday - The Nashville Network will televise the Knoxville Nationals live in 1995. TNN Motorsports will cover the sprint car racing action from the World of Outlaws' "Super Bowl" at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, IA, Saturday, August 19th at 10 p.m. (Eastern time). The two-hour telecast will feature competition from the semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval by the best short-track racers in the world. "Two years ago, TNN was the first network to bring winged sprint car racing to live television with the Slick 50 Sprint Car World Series from Phoenix, AZ," TNN Motorsports announcer Ralph Sheheen said from victory lane. "We did it again the next year from Peoria, AZ. "Now, TNN is going to televise the Knoxville Nationals live in '95!" Sheheen announced. "We at the World of Outlaws are ecstatic," Johnson said. "The Knoxville Nationals is an event that millions of World of Outlaws sprint car fans have wanted to see, but haven't been able to until now. Now then can share all of the excitement by witnessing one of the most popular and competitive forms of racing live on television. "We and Dave Bowman have worked hard for this. Mark (Kuchan) has stuck his neck out. We're going to make sure it's still attached when we finish racing at Knoxville. I think the show and fans are going to make Mark a hero. "This is a door-opener for the World of Outlaws, but it's just the beginning. Of course, it had to be at Knoxville, our premier track. Knoxville's fair board and Ralph Capitani deserve a lot of credit for this, too." The World of Outlaws is the fourth-largest racing series in the United States, attracting more than 1.5 million fans to its events annually. The August 19th telecast will mark the second time in the series' history that a regular-season race has been carried on live television. "TNN Motorsports is thrilled that our long-running, successful relationship with the World of Outlaws and Knoxville Raceway will result in what we believe will be the highlight of TNN Motorsports this year," Kuchan said. "The live telecast will truly be a great Saturday night of World of Outlaws sprint car racing." Taped coverage of the Knoxville Nationals has been a mainstay of TNN Motorsports during the last nine years on TNN's flagship series, "American Sports Cavalcade." The Knoxville Nationals will award more than $500,000 in prize money this year during the annual four-day event which attracts more than 100,000 fans from all over the world to a town with a population of 8,000. The event consists of three days of qualifying time trials, heat races and feature races, with winning drivers transferring to the 30-lap championship feature to be televised live on TNN. "This has been a dream of mine for a long time," Capitani said. "I applaud TNN's courage. A lot of people don't think you can televise sprint car racing live. But we know they can; it's going to be the most exciting form of racing you'll ever find on television." TNN's live coverage of the Knoxville Nationals will be hosted by Sheheen and Steve Evans and produced exclusively for TNN by Diamond P Sports of St. Petersburg, FL. WoO*eof
