STEVIE SMITH WINS AT TRI-STATE AS BLANEY CRASHES By Richard Day HAUBSTADT, IN (May 14) - Most people consider Friday the 13th an unlucky day. Dave Blaney will long remember Sunday, May 14th, as one of the most forgettable days in his racing career. "The Buckeye Bullet" was leading the World of Outlaws "A" Feature at Tri-State Speedway Sunday night when the #10 Vivarin J&J bicycled in the first corner and turned over. Stevie Smith, the leader when the race resumed, led the final 21 laps for his first victory of the year. Blaney didn't corner the market on spectacular crashes, however. Greg Hodnett and the #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim went for a wild ride in turn one during the main event's opening lap. Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Jason Smith turned over in the third corner 10 laps later. A 32nd- lap collision with Danny Lasoski sent Mark Kinser and the #5M Wirtgen Maxim flipping through turn two. Then, during the ensuing restart, Jeff Swindell collided with Matt Gilles in the third corner, starting a six-car crash that put Ecowater Fast-Time Award winner Aaron Berryhill and Joe Gaerte in the pits. Berryhill, the World of Outlaws' Rookie of the Year in 1992, opened the festivities by clipping .080 seconds off Tri-State's one-lap record, circling the high-banked, 1/4-mile oval in 11.591 seconds. The effort earned him his second Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year. "The Buckeye Bullet," starting a Skoal Outlaw Series "A" Feature on the pole for the second time this year, took the lead after Hodnett's crash and opened a 10-car-length advantage within three laps. He caught the backmarkers four laps into the race. Smith passed Steve Kinser for second place high in the second corner early in lap seven, and was gaining on Blaney when Jason Smith brought out the red flag late in the 11th lap. "The Buckeye Bullet" ran away from Stevie during the next two laps, and entered lapped traffic with a 10-car- length advantage during the 16th lap. Three laps later, however, with Stevie less than a car-length behind, "The Buckeye Bullet" bicycled through the first corner and turned over. Unable to continue racing, Blaney was credited with a 19th-place finish. As the race resumed, Jeff Swindell passed Andy Hillenburg for second place in turn three, only to have Hillenburg return the favor in the first corner the next time around. As Smith increased his lead to a full straightaway, Skoal Outlaw Series point standings leader Jac Haudenschild drove the #22 Pennzoil Maxim past Swindell deep in turn one midway through the race. Stevie caught the backmarkers again during the 25th lap. Smith almost suffered the same fate as Blaney with 12 laps remaining when he and the #71M Ecowater Systems Maxim bicycled through turn four. Following Mark Kinser's 32nd-lap flip and the ensuing six-car melee, Stevie opened a six-car-length advantage as Hillenburg and Haudenschild battled for the runner-up spot. "The Wild Child" fell victim to a blown engine with four laps remaining and was credited with a 14th-place finish. Smith raced into lapped traffic again during the 38th lap and beat Hillenburg under the checkered flag by four car-lengths. Steve Kinser, a three-time winner at Tri-State, finished in third place, ahead of his brother, Randy. Rounding out the top 10 in the main event were 14th- starting Bobby Davis, Jr., Van Gurley, Jr., Jerrod Hull, Craig Keel and Randy Hannagan. Hannagan, the 23rd-fastest qualifier in the 37-car field, received his second Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award for racing into 10th place from the 11th row. From Haubstadt, the World of Outlaws' fire-breathing, mud-slinging sprint car racing teams headed east for a $64,895 event scheduled for May 18-19 at Metrolina Speedway in Charlotte, NC.
