Kinser Stops Blaney's Streak With Tri-State Victory By Richard Day HAUBSTADT, IN (July 16) - Steve Kinser relegated Dave Blaney to bridesmaid status the last two years. "The Buckeye Bullet" was the runner-up in nine "A" Features Kinser won, while finishing second as Steve claimed the World of Outlaws championship each year. Kinser victimized Blaney again when a capacity crowd packed Tri- State Speedway Sunday, stopping his two-race winning streak with a flag-to-flag victory in the main event. The triumph, Kinser's 10th in 27 starts this year, gave him the Skoal Outlaw Series lead in "A" Feature victories. It was the fourth victory of his career at Tri-State, his first since 1991. Kinser, the fifth-fastest qualifier in the 39-car field, earned the right to start the 40-lap main event on the pole by winning the Vivarin Dash. Outside polesitter Sammy Swindell passed him in turn four as the green flag fell, but Steve took the lead with a low move into the second corner. The caution flag was flying late in the second lap when "B" Feature runner-up Stevie Smith, Randy Hannagan and Jim Carr spun together in turn four. Kinser put three car-lengths between his #11 Quaker State Maxim and his closest pursuers within three laps after the race resumed, and caught the backmarkers by lap seven. Greg Hodnett raced past Danny Lasoski, Lee Dunn and Blaney during the first eight laps, and passed Swindell for the runner-up spot as Kinser increased his lead to a full straightaway during the 11th lap. Jeff Swindell brought out the second caution flag when he allowed the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim to spin in turn four late in the 15th lap. Mark Kinser and Fourth Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Andy Hillenburg collided heading out of turn three on the ensuing restart, knocking Mark's #5M Wirtgen Maxim out of the race. Sammy regained the runner-up spot as the race resumed, and Blaney relegated Hodnett to fourth place the next time around. "The Buckeye Bullet" continued his run to the front midway through the race when he drove the #10 Vivarin J&J past Swindell. Kinser was a half-straightaway ahead of the field when he caught the backmarkers again during lap 22. He was entering heavy lapped traffic three laps later when the caution flag was thrown for debris on the track. Hodnett steered the #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim deep into the first corner to pass Sammy within seconds after the green flag replaced the yellow. The caution flag was flying again three laps later when Smith and Kevin Huntley collided on the back straightaway. As Stevie stopped in turn three, Hillenburg slammed on his brakes to avoid a collision, causing his #2 STP J&J to stall. As the race resumed, Hodnett and Swindell took the high road around Blaney, relegating him to fourth place. Sammy was searching for a route into the runner-up spot with seven laps remaining when he allowed his #1 Hooters Gambler to slam into Hodnett's rear bumper. The collision caused Swindell to turn over in the fourth corner, putting him out of the race. Kinser put a full straightaway between himself and Hodnett within four laps after the green flag replaced the red. He was catching the backmarkers again during the final lap, but took the checkered flag with Hodnett racing into turn three. "The car handled well everywhere on the track," Kinser said in victory lane. "When the car is good on the top, on the bottom and in the middle, you know you've got it set up right." When asked if he was nervous during the white-flag lap, he said, "No, I just made sure I gave the lapped cars plenty of room." Blaney's third-place finish pushed him to within 40 points of the lead in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings. Jac Haudenschild, the points leader, received the Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award for racing into eighth place from the 10th row. Kelly and Randy Kinser finished the main event in fourth and fifth place, respectively, ahead of Danny Lasoski, Dunn, Haudenschild, Smith and Gary Hayhurst, Jr. Sammy earned his second EcoWater Fast-Time Award of the year, pacing the qualifying session with a 12.181-second lap.
