'BUCKEYE BULLET' WINS WORLD OF OUTLAWS' TRI-STATE EVENT By Richard Day HAUBSTADT, IN (July 17) - Dave Blaney tangled with the Swindell brothers and emerged the winner Sunday night when a capacity crowd packed Tri-State Speedway. "The Buckeye Bullet" survived a late collision with Sammy, and beat Jeff in a two-lap dash for the checkered flag to claim his fourth World of Outlaws "A" Feature victory of the season. The crash involving Blaney and Sammy wasn't the only collision of note in the 40-lap war. Steve Kinser was going for his fourth straight victory when he collided with Andy Hillenburg with 12 laps remaining, damaging the front end on the #11 Valvoline Maxim and flattening its left front tire. It marked the first time this season that "The King of the Outlaws" has failed to finish a race. The 20th-place finish was his first out of the top eight in 1994. Kinser started the "A" Feature outside the front row. He raced around Vivarin Dash winner and polesitter Kenny Jacobs immediately after the green flag was thrown. Hillenburg relegated Jacobs to third place high in the third corner late in the first lap. Hillenburg chased Kinser into lapped traffic during the sixth lap, and steered his #2 STP J&J deep into the fourth corner to take the lead two laps later. Sammy and Blaney passed Jacobs during the ninth and 12th laps to take over the third and fourth positions, respectively, as Kinser pressured Andy for the lead. Hillenburg burst out of heavy lapped traffic, and opened a 10-car-length advantage as Blaney, Sammy and Jacobs battled for third place during lap 17. Andy approached J.C. Sulawske, Sid Blandford and Joe Gaerte midway through the race, which allowed Kinser to narrow the gap. Hillenburg followed Gaerte past Sulawske and Blandford to maintain the lead, however. Jerry Hamby brought out the red flag with 15 laps remaining when he hit the fourth-corner retaining wall and flipped. Within seconds after the green flag replaced the red, Jacobs took the #71M Ecowater Stealth for a spin with Randy Kinser and Steve Beitler in turn two. The red flag was flying again seven laps later when Danny Thoman bounced off the wall in the second corner. Kinser raced past Andy deep in turn three on the ensuing restart. As Steve slid to the middle of turn four, Hillenburg swerved into the low groove and they collided. After his left front tire was replaced, "The King of the Outlaws" restarted the race at the back of the pack. The front-end damage suffered in the crash forced him into the pits with 11 laps remaining. Blaney lined up behind Hillenburg when the race resumed, and steered the #10 Vivarin J&J to the deepest point in first corner to take the lead early in the 31st lap. Andy was trying to regain the lead high in turn four the next time around when he spun to a stop. Just seconds after the race resumed, Jac Haudenschild steered the #22 Pennzoil Maxim deep into turn one to pass Jeff, the "B" Feature winner, for third place. But Blandford allowed his #31 B&B Excavating Avenger to spin in the first corner, nullifying the pass. The next restart saw Mark Kinser take the inside line past Haudenschild in turn four, only to have "The Wild Child" return the favor in the second corner the next time around. "The Buckeye Bullet" caught the backmarkers with a 10-car-length advantage with four laps remaining. Sammy caught the leader two laps later, and took the lead deep in turn one. When he slid in front of Blaney in the second corner, Dave swerved into the low groove. The #10's front bumper hit the rear of the #1, causing Swindell to hit the wall and turn over. The red flag was thrown, setting up a two-lap dash for the checkered flag. Jim Carr restarted between "The Buckeye Bullet" and Jeff Swindell when the race resumed, enabling Blaney to win the drag race to the finish line by two car-lengths. "The Wild Child" finished the main event in third place, ahead of Mark Kinser, Greg Hodnett, Stevie Smith, 14th-starting Johnny Herrera, Gaerte, Jacobs and Hillenburg.
