Stevie Smith Wins Dirt Nationals' Opener By Richard Day TERRE HAUTE, IN (October 13) - Stevie Smith picked up where he left off from his Rolling Wheels victory when a standing-room-only crowd welcomed the World of Outlaws to the Terre Haute Action Track Friday for opening night at the Fourth Annual U.S. Dirt Nationals. Stevie, the third-fastest qualifier in the 52-car field, earned the right to start the Preliminary Feature on the front row by following EcoWater Fast-Qualifier Mark Kinser across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. Then he led all 20 laps to win the feature. The 1990 Skoal Outlaw Series Rookie of the Year burst into the lead from the outside pole twice before the green flag flew for a full lap. On the opening start, two-time defending U.S. Dirt Nationals champion Steve Kinser took his #11 Quaker State Maxim for a spin in turn two. Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Jimmy Brewer brought out the red flag on the restart when he flipped in the first corner. Smith steered the #71M EcoWater Systems Maxim around Mark again high in turn four to take the lead when the green flag replaced the red. He opened a seven-car-length advantage during the first four laps, and the caught the backmarkers the next time around. Jeff Shepard, who missed the second half of the 1994 season while recovering from injuries, raced past Danny Lasoski, Jac Haudenschild and Skoal Outlaw Series points leader Dave Blaney to take over fourth place during the opening lap. Mark challenged Stevie for the lead twice during laps six and seven - making a run at him in the high groove in the fourth corner, then trying the inside line in turn one - but was unable to drive the #5M Wirtgen Maxim into first place. The leaders were maneuvering through dense lapped traffic early in the eighth lap when "The Wild Child" caught Mark in turn one. Later in that same lap, Blaney steered the #10 Vivarin J&J high into turn four to pass Shepard for fourth place. Mark challenged Smith for the lead again in turn one midway through the race, but Stevie was equal to the challenge. Mark fell five car-lengths behind Smith in the next two laps, but caught him again late in lap 13 as Haudenschild and Blaney joined the battle for first place. Lasoski surrendered sixth place with seven laps remaining when the engine in the #77 Cornwell Tools Maxim stalled in turn one. "The King of the Outlaws," racing back through the field, lined up seventh as the race resumed and passed Kenny Jacobs deep in turn four as the green flag replaced the yellow. He challenged Shepard the next time around, but was unable to complete the pass for fifth place. Smith put 10 car-lengths between himself and his closest pursuers during the 17th lap, and caught the backmarkers with two laps remaining. Racing through lapped traffic with ease, he won the race with 10 car-lengths to spare. Haudenschild finished in third place, ahead of Blaney, Shepard, Steve Kinser, Jacobs, First Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Johnny Herrera, Dale Blaney and Craig Dollansky. Mark's 17.487-second qualifying lap, only .203 seconds off the one-lap record he set at Terre Haute on May 12th, earned him his 22nd EcoWater Fast-Time Award of the year. Jeff Swindell, the 23rd-fastest qualifier, passed 12 sprinters from inside the 12th row to finish in 11th place. Greg Hodnett, Swindell's Two Winners Racing teammate, also suffered qualifying woes. The #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim's engine problems forced Hodnett to forgo his second qualifying run, leaving him 38th-quick. Hodnett's engine trouble persisted throughout the preliminary program and kept him from qualifying for the feature. Bobby Allen, making his 1995 World of Outlaws debut, was also missing from the evening's main event. He finished seventh in both the Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race and the "B" Feature.
