Mark Kinser Claims U.S. Dirt Nationals By Richard Day TERRE HAUTE, IN (October 14) - After 11 years of racing in cousin Steve Kinser's shadow, Mark Kinser made a name for himself in 1995. In doing so, he made some of his most emphatic statements at the Terre Haute Action Track. He spoiled Steve's return to the World of Outlaws at the semi- banked, 1/2-mile oval on May 12th, setting Terre Haute's one-lap record and winning the "A" Feature. Then he broke Steve's two-year stranglehold on the U.S. Dirt Nationals Saturday with a flag-to-flag victory in the championship feature. Mark, the runner-up in Friday's Preliminary Feature, earned the right to start the 30-lap main event on the pole by winning the Snap- on Tools Dash. He burst into the lead as the green flag fell, and had the #5M Wirgten Maxim 15 car-lengths ahead of the field within three laps. Kinser maintained a comfortable advantage as outside polesitter Danny Lasoski and Jac Haudenschild battled for the runner-up spot, and caught the backmarkers eight laps into the race. Lasoski narrowed the gap to seven car-lengths the next time around as Mark slowed in dense lapped traffic. He returned to his 15-car- length comfort zone two laps later as he cleared the backmarkers and "The Dude" searched for an opening. Craig Dollansky brought out the only caution flag marring the fast-paced race late in the 12th lap when he took the #2D Jensen Construction Trostle for a spin in the fourth corner. Mark raced away from the field while Steve drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past Dave Blaney to take over fifth place as the green flag replaced the yellow. Mark was 20 car-lengths ahead midway through the race. Lasoski narrowed the margin as the leaders approached lapped traffic again during the 19th lap. At the same time, Steve took the low line into turn three to pass Preliminary Feature winner Stevie Smith for fourth place. Only six car-lengths separated Mark and his closest pursuers when Haudenschild steered the #22 Pennzoil Maxim deep into turn three to take over the runner-up spot with nine laps remaining. While holding off Lasoski, "The Wild Child" closed to within five car-lengths of the lead the next time around. Mark increased his advantage to six car-lengths as the backmarkers separated with five laps remaining. He added two more car-lengths to his lead when Haudenschild bumped the second-corner retaining wall late in lap 28. While "The Wild Child" chased Mark, Steve took over third place with a 29th-lap pass of Lasoski. Mark was eight car-lengths ahead when he took the checkered flag in his 14th victory in a World of Outlaws "A" Feature this season. When asked if he knew Haudenschild made several runs at him, Mark said, "I figured somebody was close, so I had to be careful in lapped traffic. Racing with these guys, if you slow down, somebody's bound to be coming." Haudenschild's second-place finish pushed him to within 159 points of "The Buckeye Bullet" in their battle for the lead in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings. Only two events - at Battleground Speedway (Wednesday) and the Devil's Bowl (Friday and Saturday) - remain on the 1995 Skoal Outlaw Series schedule, however. "The King of the Outlaws" finished third, ahead of Lasoski, Smith, Blaney, Kenny Jacobs, Johnny Herrera, Andy Hillenburg and Second Heat Race winner Jeff Swindell. Jacobs was running fourth with less than a lap remaining in the First Heat Race when the engine in the #U2 United Expressline Trailers Maxim exploded. He won the "B" Feature, then raced into seventh place in the main event. Herrera received his fourth Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award of the year for driving the #5 Jackpot Junction Schnee into eighth place from inside the ninth row.
