Swindell to Open Outlaws Season with Beef Packers
FRESNO, CA (January 24) -- Sammy Swindell had no plans to race early this season until one of his former crew members suggested Dennis Roth call him recently.
Roth, who hired Tim Shaffer to drive his #83 Beef Packers Eagle in November, had an opening in his second car when Kasey Kahne joined Robert Yates’ NASCAR Busch Grand National team. Roth called Swindell and offered him the opportunity to race in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series first three events and the three-time series champion quickly accepted.
"I wasn’t going to race early in the year if he hadn’t called," Swindell said Thursday. "We’re going to race Hanford (CA, Kings Speedway), Perris (Auto Speedway) and Las Vegas. That’s all we’re doing right now. I wasn’t doing anything and there are no races for Kevin (his son) at that time, so I accepted the opportunity. I’m looking forward to it. It’ll be a little bit of a change."
Swindell, who has been an owner/driver for the last seven years, won Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series championships in 1981, 1982 and 1997.
"One of the guys we hired as a crew member -- Troy Welty -- worked for Sammy last year," Roth said. "He talks to Sammy because he worked for him quite a while. Sammy mentioned to him that if we were going to run the second car, he’d like to race it. Kasey Kahne was going to drive the car, but he signed to run 21 Busch races this year. He could only run a few races, so we thought,‘ if Sammy wants to drive the car we’ll call him.’ We called him and he said,‘ Absolutely.’ After the first three events, we’ll talk about him racing more with us."
Jac Haudenschild opened the 2001 season with Roth, but was replaced by Joey Saldana after 14 events. Roth finished 10th in Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series car owner points last year.
