Swindell Roars to Victory at Sweetwater Speedway By Richard Day

ROCK SPRINGS, WY (September 21) - Three-time Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion Sammy Swindell has made a habit of turning his fortunes around in a hurry. Of the 19 times he has finished out of the top 10 this season, he has put his #1 Channellock Stealth in the top five in the next race 12 times. Winning Tuesday's "A" Feature at Sweetwater Speedway in flag-to- flag fashion tasted even better after he crashed early in the Gold Cup Race of Champions main event Saturday. The $8,000 victory, Swindell's seventh of the season, pushed him past Johnny Herrera into fifth place in the point standings with 11 events remaining on the schedule. Swindell, the 10th-fastest qualifier in the 27-car field, won the Third NAPA Parts Heat Race and earned the right to start the "A" Feature on the pole by beating Steve Kinser across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. After Chris Youngman nullified the main event's first start by stopping on the front straightaway, Swindell burst into the lead. Sammy was 20 car-lengths ahead of Kinser when he entered lapped traffic during the fourth lap. Kinser narrowed the gap to six car-lengths in dense lapped traffic within two laps, then restarted behind Swindell when George Porter stopped on the front stretch early in lap eight. A coil wire problem in the #21 PC Joey J&J caused Lance Blevins to stop next to Porter. Blevins actually recorded the second-fastest lap in the Vivarin qualifying session, but because ignition problems forced him to take one lap at the end he was scored 11th. Tim Shaffer, who suffered an injured leg when debris hit him early in the race, stopped in turn four as the green flag replaced the yellow. Swindell controlled the ensuing restart, and was building a comfortable advantage early in the 11th lap when Andy Hillenburg stopped on the back straightaway with a flat right rear tire. Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser challenged cousin Steve as the race resumed, but was unable to drive the #5M Mopar Maxim into second place. Second NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Stevie Smith used an inside move in the second corner to pass Herrera for sixth the next time around. Swindell opened a 15-car-length advantage midway through the race while the Kinser cousins battled for the runner-up spot. Donny Schatz, whose turn-two collision with Mark Kinser on the opening lap of the Channellock Dash sent the #15 Parker Stores Maxim flipping, brought out a backup car. He passed eight cars to win the "B" Feature and started outside the 12th row in the main event. Donny raced past 16 cars during the first 16 laps, then took the high line around Herrera in turn three to claim seventh place two laps later. Swindell opened a 10-car-length advantage during the 21st lap, only to have Kinser cut his lead in half in dense lapped traffic within five laps. Smith and Schatz passed Manufacturers Rookie of the Year candidate Daryn Pittman during the final 2 1/2 laps, while Swindell maintained a comfortable advantage. Steve Kinser was five car-lengths behind when Sammy took the checkered flag. "It got a little tight there at the end," Swindell said. "We got to where we were lapping some of the faster cars, and when you're running 130 - maybe 140 - and trying to keep your momentum up, having to get on the brakes slows you down by 40 miles per hour or so. That makes it pretty easy for someone to run you down. "The Channellock Stealth has been fast here lately; we just fell out of too many races at the beginning of the year." Mark Kinser finished in third place, ahead of Jac Haudenschild, Smith, Schatz, Pittman, Herrera, Dale Blaney and Danny Lasoski. Mark's 42nd top-five finish of the season pushed him 44 points ahead of "The Dude" in their battle for the series championship. Mark received his 26th Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the year after slashing .432 seconds off the qualifying standard Dave Blaney set on August 19, 1997. Kinser circled the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval in 12.854 seconds, an average speed of 105.026 m.p.h.
