Hodnett Wins at Sweetwater as Kinser Crashes By Richard Day ROCK SPRINGS, WY (August 19) - One #11's misfortune was another #11's gain Tuesday at Sweetwater Speedway as Greg Hodnett became the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 11th different "A" Feature winner of the year. Steve Kinser raced ahead of the 24-car field until the engine in his #11 Quaker State Maxim lost power early in lap 26. Hodnett restarted in the lead and drove the #11H Selma Shell Maxim to his first victory of 1997 and second of his World of Outlaws career. "The team's doing a great job," Hodnett said in victory lane. "We've been close all year long, and we've wanted to get here all year long. It feels great right now. We worked hard to get here and I just hope we can come back and do it again next year." Sammy Swindell finished second, and regained the lead in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series driver standings as Kinser settled for a 21st-place finish and Dave Blaney came back from an early mishap to run 14th. Blaney, who only two days before won his first Amoco Knoxville Nationals championship, opened the World of Outlaws' first event at Sweetwater by setting the track's qualifying standard. His 101.611-m.p.h. lap around the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval earned him his third Channellock Fast-Time Award of 1997. "The Buckeye Bullet" started on the pole of the Vivarin Dash, but finished second as Sammy Swindell won the seven-lap race for the right to start the 35-lap main event inside the front row. After Johnny Herrera and Dave Fitzgerald had problems starting the main event, Swindell led the field down the front straightaway. Kinser, who started inside the second row, took the low line into the first corner to pass Blaney for second, then took the lead with an inside move through turns three and four. "The King of the Outlaws" opened a four-car-length advantage within three laps, and increased the margin as Blaney challenged Swindell for second place. Blaney was trying to pass Sammy with a high move in the second corner early in the fifth lap when he allowed his #10 Vivarin J&J to jump the cushion and spin. His collision with Stevie Smith knocked a coil off Stevie's #19 coil-over sprinter, putting Smith out of the race. Kinser raced away from the field as the green flag replaced the yellow and enjoyed a comfortable advantage until 1994 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year Sid Blandford jumped the cushion in turn one and flipped two laps later. As the race resumed, "The King of the Outlaws" left his closest pursuers behind while cousin Mark Kinser took the high line into the second corner to pass Andy Hillenburg for fifth. Mark continued his run toward the front five laps later with a turn-two pass of Jeff Swindell. He followed the leaders into lapped traffic the next time around. Jeff drove the #7TW Gold Eagle J&J past the defending World of Outlaws champion early in the 16th lap. "The Buckeye Bullet" was racing back through the field midway through the race when his collision with Lance Blevins sent the #21 Citgo J&J spinning in the fourth corner. Jac Haudenschild steered the #22 Pennzoil Maxim high into the fourth corner to pass Mark Kinser for fifth place as the race resumed. Then he passed Jeff for fourth with a high move through turn three the next time around. Hodnett, who started outside the third row, took over second place with a high move past Sammy in the fourth corner late in lap 19. He was a full straightaway behind "The King of the Outlaws" before a puff of smoke billowed from the #11 and Steve stopped in the second corner. Hodnett restarted the race at the front of the field, but was unable to shake Sammy from his rear bumper. "The Wild Child" and Hillenburg were battling for third place when they collided and spun between turns three and four, setting up a four-lap dash to the checkered flag. Sammy pressured Hodnett down the stretch. He threatened to steal the victory when Greg slid out of the low groove in turn four during the final two laps, but couldn't complete the pass. "We had a good starting spot and caught a break with Steve's problem," Hodnett said. "I was able to get a good bite on the bottom for a while, but then they started getting down in the mud and spraying it up into the groove coming out. The car worked great, but it was tough catching the cushion in four." Jeff Swindell held off Mark Kinser for third place. Tenth- starting Joe Gaerte finished fifth, ahead of Craig Dollansky, Rookie of the Year candidates Donny Schatz and Paul McMahan, Herrera and Haudenschild.
