Swindell Wins at Southern Oregon as Kinser Crashes By Richard Day MEDFORD, OR (August 27) - What goes around, comes around. Although Sammy Swindell leads the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' driver standings by 64 points, he has suffered his share of sour luck this season. While leading 24 "A" Features, he has crashed twice, stopped with a mechanical problem once and been passed seven other times. He has also finished second behind Mark Kinser seven times. Swindell received a stroke of good luck Wednesday at Southern Oregon Speedway when Kinser crashed with less than half a lap remaining, allowing him to win his 14th main event of the year. "The Channellock Gambler was a little tight at the beginning of the race, but we were able to catch up with Mark at the end," Swindell said. "I got caught behind a lapped car and I didn't think I was going to be able to catch back up. "We're finally starting to get some breaks. We had some bad luck earlier this year and dropped out of a few races, but it seems like it's coming around. Maybe we'll be able to wrap this thing up in the next month or so." Swindell dominated the World of Outlaws' Wild, Wild Northwest Tour, winning the last four races and finishing second in the opener at Sweetwater Speedway. Jac Haudenschild, who two nights before was woozy after an early crash, got off to a fast start Wednesday. "The Wild Child" received his 16th Channellock Fast-Time Award of the season after pacing the qualifying session. His 100.318-m.p.h. lap around the semi-banked, 1/3-mile oval sliced .072 seconds off the record Kinser set last August 29th. Haudenschild earned the right to start the "A" Feature outside the front row by following Kinser across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. Swindell finished fourth in the five-lap race, then started the main event outside the second row. Kinser burst into the lead from the pole as the green flag fell in the main event. Swindell passed Stevie Smith in turn four, then took the low line through the second corner to pass "The Wild Child" for the runner-up spot early in the first lap. Randy Tiner and Smith passed Haudenschild for third and fourth place during the second and third laps. The leaders were entering lapped traffic five laps into the race when Dan Menne spun in turn one. Kinser raced away from the field as the green flag replaced the yellow, only to have Billy Nutter stop in turn three with a blown engine two laps later. Mark immediately started rebuilding his advantage when the race resumed as Tiner challenged Swindell for second place. Dave Blaney steered his #10 Vivarin J&J deep into turn four to pass Smith for fourth place late in lap 11. Kinser was 10 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when he caught the backmarkers again during the 13th lap. Steve Kinser, winner of the World of Outlaws' inaugural event at Southern Oregon Speedway last August, raced into fourth place from inside the fifth row during the first half of the race. Mark was a straightaway ahead of Swindell when Smith, Blaney and Haudenschild collided in the fourth corner late in lap 19. Although all three managed to continue racing, Smith and "The Buckeye Bullet" lost several positions. Stevie and Blaney passed Steve Kinser midway through lap 23 when he allowed his #11 Quaker State Maxim to turn completely around on the back stretch. Swindell narrowed the gap as Mark entered dense lapped traffic with five laps remaining, and was only five car-lengths behind when Mark took the white flag. Sammy slowed behind a lapped car, allowing Kinser to open a 10-car-length advantage as he approached the third corner. Kinser lost the lead, however, when he hit a retaining tire in turn three. Although the #5M Wirtgen Maxim suffered front-end damage, Mark continued to make his way through the fourth corner. Sammy took the lead in turn four as Kinser headed toward the infield. Haudenschild clipped the #5M, turning Mark toward the finish line and allowing him to finish in seventh place. Tiner held off Smith to finish second. Completing the top 10 in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 56th event of the year were Haudenschild, Joe Gaerte, Blaney, the Kinser cousins - Mark and Steve - "B" Feature winner Jeff Swindell and 16th-starting Donny Schatz.
