Kinser Dominates Second Skagit Preliminary By Richard Day ALGER, WA (August 25) - Steve Kinser responded with an intriguing answer to a simple question after cruising to victory in the World of Outlaws' Second Preliminary Feature at Skagit Speedway Friday, "Yeah, I broke a sweat," Kinser replied when asked if he sweated during his flag-to-flag victory. "I'm sweating because I'm 25-to-30 pounds overweight." How fast will "The King of the Outlaws" be when he sheds those 25- -to-30 pounds? God only knows. After recording Friday's fourth-fastest qualifying lap, the 14- time Skoal Outlaw Series champion won every race he entered - the Fourth Snap-on Tools Heat Race, the Vivarin Dash and the Preliminary Feature. Kinser drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the lead immediately after the green flag fell in the 30-lap feature. He was catching the backmarkers early in the fourth lap when Jeff Fletcher took his #5 sprinter for a spin in the second corner, bringing out the only caution flag of the race. Steve was four car-lengths ahead of Paul McMahan when he entered lapped traffic late in the 10th lap. When Jac Haudenschild, Andy Hillenburg and Dave Blaney caught the leaders while battling for third place three laps later, less than six car-lengths separated the top five. McMahan hesitated behind a pack of backmarkers entering the second corner midway through the race, allowing "The Wild Child," Hillenburg and Blaney to race past. Hillenburg steered his #2 STP J&J deep in the first corner to pass "The Buckeye Bullet" for third place as "B" Feature runner-up Jeff Swindell challenged McMahan for fifth early in lap 19. Kinser opened a half-straightaway advantage as Haudenschild, Hillenburg and Blaney took turns passing each other later in the 19th lap. "The King of the Outlaws" maintained a full straightaway lead as Swindell and McMahan passed Haudenschild during the 23rd and 25th laps. "The Wild Child" regained fifth place by steering the #22 Pennzoil Maxim high around McMahan in the second corner early in lap 26. With two laps remaining, Blaney raced wheel-to-wheel with Hillenburg through turn one but was unable to complete the pass. Swindell made it a three-car battle for the runner-up spot during the white-flag lap as Kinser took the checkered flag with a straightaway to spare. When asked how he felt about running the final 26 laps under the green flag, Kinser said, "We raced in lapped traffic most of the race. I've won some races with a lot of lapped traffic, and I've lost some. Sometimes it can help you, and other times it doesn't." Hillenburg held off Blaney and Swindell to finish second. Haudenschild finished fifth, ahead of McMahan, Keith Kauffman, 14th- starting Randy Hannagan, Greg Hodnett and Danny Lasoski. Blaney received his second EcoWater Fast-Time Award of the year after slicing .147 seconds off the one-lap record Stevie Smith set at Skagit a year ago. "The Buckeye Bullet" drove the #10 Vivarin J&J around the high-banked, 3/10-mile oval in 11.773 seconds. Smith salvaged an otherwise discouraging night for the Motter Brothers' EcoWater team by racing into 14th place in the feature. Stevie, .397 seconds off Blaney's record-setting pace in time trials, qualified 12th-quick. A fifth-place finish in the Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race put him in the "B" Feature. While winning the "B," the #71M EcoWater Maxim suffered a broken valve spring, which delayed the start of the evening's main event. Smith started at the back of the pack and raced past 10 sprinters.
