Blaney Passes Lasoski to Win Skagit Opener By Richard Day ALGER, WA (August 24) - Dave Blaney's experience on Skagit Speedway's high-banked, 3/10-mile oval helped him beat Danny Lasoski through lapped traffic and win the World of Outlaws' opening-night Preliminary Feature Thursday. Blaney, who won a 40-lap war with Jeff Swindell at Skagit last August 27th, passed Lasoski amid a pack of backmarkers late in the 20th lap and kept the #10 Vivarin J&J ahead of the 24-car field throughout the final 10 laps for the $4,000 victory. "I thought my car was pretty even with Danny's," Blaney said following his third Preliminary Feature victory of the year. "I just got a break in lapped traffic. He got held up, and I found a hole to get through." "The Buckeye Bullet," the leader in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings, was the third-fastest qualifier in the 54-car field. He won the Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race and earned the right to start the 30-lap feature inside the second row by following Jac Haudenschild and Lasoski across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. "The Wild Child" and Lasoski raced side-by-side into turn one within seconds after the green flag fell in the feature, and Danny took the lead with a high move into the second corner. The red flag replaced the green before "The Dude" had a chance to increase his advantage, however, as Bo Mann, Todd Vonstroberg and Snap-on Tools Heat Race winners Tim Levin and Jason Solwold crashed in turn four late in the second lap. Fifth- and seventh-lap cautions also kept Lasoski from opening a comfortable advantage. "The Dude" was three car-lengths ahead of Haudenschild late in the 10th lap when a drive shaft problem in the #22 Pennzoil Maxim forced Jac to stop on the front straightaway. Unable to continue racing, "The Wild Child" received credit for a 19th-place finish. As the race resumed, Swindell took the low line into the fourth corner to pass Stevie Smith for third place. Two laps later, Jeff was challenging Blaney for the runner-up spot when Andy Hillenburg relegated Smith to fifth place. Lasoski had the #77 Cornwell Tools Maxim four car-lengths ahead of Blaney when he entered lapped traffic early in lap 15. "The Buckeye Bullet" caught the leader as Lasoski labored behind a pair of backmarkers three laps later. "The Dude" passing Greg Brown late in the 20th lap when he hesitated to avoid a collision with Greg DeCaires, allowing Blaney to race into the lead. "The Buckeye Bullet" opened a comfortable advantage as Swindell and Hillenburg challenged Lasoski for the runner-up spot during the next five laps. Hillenburg took the high road around Jeff in turn four late in the 27th lap, only to have Swindell return the favor in the same spot two laps later. Blaney was six car-lengths ahead of Lasoski when he took the checkered flag. Swindell held off Hillenburg for third place. Rounding out the top 10 in the opening-night feature were Smith, Steve Kinser, Joe Gaerte, Paul McMahan, Randy Hannagan and Greg Hodnett. With ignition problems plaguing the #11 Quaker State Maxim early, 13 drivers were faster than "The King of the Outlaws" in time trials. He passed eight sprinters to finish sixth in the Preliminary Feature, however. McMahan received the EcoWater Fast-Time Award after pacing the qualifying session with a 12.223-second lap. He failed to qualify for the Vivarin Dash when the rear end in his sprinter failed during the First Snap-on Tools Heat Race. Keith Kauffman was in fourth place with less than a lap remaining in the Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race when the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim suffered a flat right front tire. Kauffman came back to win the "B" Feature and raced into 11th place in the feature.
